My "OC" GPU weakens ?

alleyn321

Hi LinusTechTips memebers!

Recently while I was playing Battlefield4 I noticed that my FPS dropped below 60Fps. So I ran Furmark bench and yes im getting lower FPS.

These are my results when I ran Furmark the First time when I got the GPU and First time i OC'd the GPU ( Reference Core Edition AMD r9 290x )

BEFORE FPS: min:65, max:77, avg:74 - OPTIONS: DynBkg   Default r9 290x

                    FPS: min:97, max:99, avg:97 - OPTIONS: DynBkg   Overclock r9 290x   ( 1180/1500 Mhz )

26.9% FPS Increase compared to Default Clocks

      NOW FPS: min:69, max:71, avg:69 - OPTIONS: DynBkg   Default r9 290x

                    FPS: min:76, max:79, avg:76 - OPTIONS: DynBkg   Overclock r9 290x   ( 1180/1500 Mhz )

6.9% FPS Increase compared to Default Clocks

Any ideas?

The GPU is being Water-Cooled and never reached more than 60 Degrees C.

Sometimes when you oc it might not have enough volts. It'll run the benchmark, but it'll be slower than stock.

Spoiler

have you updated drivers?

Yes and No

About 2-3 days Ago I downloaded and installed new Drivers from AMD Gaming App but the Driver I downloaded is the same as the one I had. Both of them are 15.7.1. so not sure if just a mistake from the App or ... I dont know

This I would be Unstable Overclock.

First time when I run Furmark with OC and after ( When I spotted im getting lower fps ) with OC im getting 21% Diference.

26.9% fps increase from an 18% overclock is just impossible ...

Thats what i'm thinking now. 26% is a lot from "simple" overclock

Maybe Furmark Error ( false Results the first time I ran it )

Also furmark is shit to test overclocks now with power limits, it will not run at it's max speed.

Update: These are my Results from old Gtx 780

           FPS: min:67, max:69, avg:67 - OPTIONS: DynBkg   Default gtx 780

           FPS: min:71, max:74, avg:71 - OPTIONS: DynBkg   Overclock gtx 780

By looking at this I can clearly say Furmark gave my "false" results when I first Overclocked my GPU.

But still the FPS drop in BF4 remains unknown. I will try to re-installs drivers, Update W10 updates etc
