My PC is slow and everything's not working

Unicorn_Noob

HELP!

I built my PC about two month ago, but it feels very slow. It starts up very quickly (about 15 secs), but after that it just feels slow, especially in games. I have steam installed on my HDD (I use my SSD as boot device) and some games just don't work. FC3 and JC2 for example.

The specs of my PC should be able to run most games really well, but for some reason it just feels unresponsive. Can i fix this without new hardware?

Here's my specs:

  • CPU
    Intel core I5-4690K (not overclocked)
  • Motherboard
    MSI gaming 5
  • RAM
    Corsair Vengeance 8GB
  • GPU
EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 SSC+
  • Case
    Corsair Carbide SPEC-01
  • Storage
    WD blue 1TB / Kingston HyperX 120GB
  • PSU
    Seasonic M12II Evo 750 Watt
  • Cooling
    be quiet! Shadow Rock LP
  • Mouse
    MadCatz R.A.T.5
  • Sound
    Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma
  • Operating System
    Windows 8.1

I hope you guys can help me get this baby running faster!

What do you mean by slow?

Slow loading times? Low Framerate?

Mainly the loading time, but also a bit of framerate. I'm also struggling with the responsiveness in games.

Try disabling programs you do not use on startup

Task Manager -> startup (tab) -> Disable everything you either do not need / don't know what it is.

If you have geforce experience installed, try uninstalling it, I know quite a few people who've had odd issues with the it.

Another thing you can try is to go in MSconfig, disable all start up program and all NON WINDOWS services, if that removes the odd behavior you describe, you can slowly re-enable them until you figure out if a specific program or service is causing weirdness to happen.

Have you checked task manager when this happens? Sounds like its either RAM being maxed or HDD indexing (background downlaods cause this also).
