Hey Guys,

I'm going to be doing a new build in the next few weeks and I'm not sure on what CPU to purchase. First let me give you a bit of background what it will be used for. It will mainly be used for gaming however i do like to stream and edit videos from time to time, hopefully more with the new rig, im also a graphic and 3d artist so i do a lot of rendering and in engine stuff. At the moment I'm looking at 2 cpus, First the i7 6700k and second the i7 5930k (for the extra 2 cores). Now my question is knowing what i will be using it for are the extra two cores worth it as i would like to future proof the build for as long as possible, I would also like to make use of DDR4 so dont really want to go for something like a 4790k.

(forgot to add on will the difference in clock speeds make a noticable difference)

5820k would be better.

I think you have narrowed them down to the correct options. If it were me it go X99

I'd go for the 5930k if I was u (or just if I had the money).

Go with the 5820K, the 5930K is unnecessarily overpriced.

It has more PCIe lanes. Depending on use, the customer either chose the wrong CPU or "he just doesn't knwo what he pays for".

It is not overpriced. You get what you pay for. Period.

Dont buy i7 on the mainstream.. Choice is i5-6600K, i5 4690K or i7-5820K. X99 really doesnt have that much of a price premium anymore. I have the 5930K - mostly because I managed to pick one up for only £80 more than a 5820K, and I actually use PCI-E SSDs so its handy to have extra lanes.

The i7-5820K gives you an extra two cores over the 6700K as well but doesn't cost as much as the 5930K. Can be overclocked to beyond 4GHz easily with a decent cooler.

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W

The 5820K has 28 PCIe lanes. That is enough of 2X SLI (8X/8X), as well as a bunch of add in cards/PCIe SSDs. Anyone doing over 2X SLI is stupid anyway, so 5820K is enough.

With the right reasonable motherboards (ironically smattered all around the price ranges with the sli plus being the cheapest to have it) 3 way sli is easily possible as well.

8x/8x/8x and a 3x4 m.2 ssd.

Literally no reason whatsoever to go 5930k when that same money could be spent instead on a super insane mobo that allows 4 way with a 5820k anyways. (Plx for the win).

@op

If you love near a micro center the 5820k will actually be cheaper and as such should definately be your choice.

If not, well, I'd still personally recommend x99 as it isn't a large premium but it does require overclocking and massively slower boot times, so if that sort of thing bothers you go z170.

 how much slower boot times less than 30 secs? or more?

Mine takes ~1minute to desktop; but thats due to it still being on diagnostic boot and a LOT of drives. Its also a rampage which tend to take a little longer to boot. My Pentium G3220 (overclocked) + H81 mobo actually boot faster lol.

I didn't express myself correctly I think. I never said you were wrong. I just wanted to correct you on the fact that the 5930 is priced higher without any point.

Your right with the fact that he is probably better of with a 5820. I just thought of these 2 since he mention only these. That was amid take on my side.

1 min on an SSD or HDD?? Never heard of that. I think I learned something new about x99 today.

When I turn on all the fast boot options available my average boot time is like 27-34 seconds with an ssd.

Honestly though, it is massively slower when you consider z97 with an I5/I7 takes only 2-5 seconds to boot with a ssd.

SSD; But its still in diagnostic mode and there are a shedload of HDDs connected - And I didnt time it.

Always found that rampage boards tend to boot a little slower.

Ill try and time it for ya later..

Nah you don't have to. I was just a little well surprised since my shitty old HDD based laptop takes about as long( 1drive only though :P). Guess that's just the way it works.

May just be my setups but I have always found enthusiast class hardware takes an order of magnitude longer to boot than mainstream (for example, P35, X58, X99 Chipsetts) vs G41, H61, H81 and even Z97.

Also number of dimms installed increased boot time in my experience

I am sure a lot is down to HDD and other settings - On the enthusiast grade stuff (X58/X99) I tend to have 8 disks minimum (in some kinda of raid array, usually raid 1 or raid 10) . Compared to at most on the normal stuff - And ye my H81 Boots Win10 in ~15 sec.

I also tend to buy write-centric SSDs where endurance and reliability are more important to me than read speed.

But boot time is a non issue as I tend to turn PC on and only turn it off at the end of the day.
