I am looking for new headphones to get in the next couple months with a 200-300$ budget I currently own the hyper x cloud gaming  headset which I hate for numerous reasons. Any help would be appreciated. Also do I need a dac or amp? Also I don't know much about audio stuff. I prefer closed headphones and I listen to electronic music and I play games. Also my headphones rarely leave my desk.

More info please. Just for games? What genre/s of music? Where would you be buying from? Open back or closed?

I will edit the post.

Since OP didn't state what genre/s of music he listens to and other info (yet), I'd recommend the K612 Pro or the FIdelio X2 for open back and the Nad Viso HP50 for closed back.

Formerly known as TumbleButt (I won't send dick pics now, I'll just send lemons instead (rotting lemons from now on). Recommend the M50X, I'll send you a rotting lemon... because thats what you are, a rotting lemon...)

How important is bass to you?

I really don't no. I don't think about that when I listen to music.

NAD VISO HP50 would do the trick.

I'd say go with DT990s but you'd need an amp :>

I also like the Philips Fidelio X1

What about the audio technica ath-m50x?

Stay away from those pair.

They are fine for the price. But your budget allows much better options(sound/comfort).

Nope. When the M40X is sonically the same (even more neutral), why bother with the M50X? Plus there are guys who can't stand them in terms of comfort.

First off, regardless of which impedance, the sensitivity of the DT990 is actually high enough that it can run off of the motherboard's audio anyways. Don't buy into the idea of "headphones can be picky in terms of amps" when an amp is supposed to do one thing and pretty much one thing only: Amplify the sound of the source while NOT amplifying the noise floor. Its just there to add more volume to your volume without the distortion or raising the noise floor.

Second, OP did state he'd prefer closed. But either way, OP can't go wrong with the Fidelio X2 or the DT990.

Idk, unless you have one of the higher end motherboards i find it gives off static regardless of the headphone. Yeah, they are open back but he didn't say how much he liked bass and i figured the open back would be better for games anyway.

Idk didn't even know the M40x existed lmao, and yeah that's what i meant by better 'sound/comfort'... i mean when the hd558s are the same price and miles more comfortable.

A little bit of a misconception on open VS closedback headphones about being more open-sounding. You see, not all open back headphones have a large soundstage. The HD600 sounds more of a closed back headphone due to its small soundstage, while the Shure SRH1540 is a closed back headphone that has a much, much more substantial soundstage. In gaming, soundstage and positional cue matters more whether it is open or closed back. The thing is that a lot more headphones naturally have a larger soundstage partially because they are open back, but mostly because of what their transducers are tuned to be... which is why its okay to assume open backs are better for competitive gaming in a reasonably quiet environment.

The HD280 is actually better than the M50X in terms of price to performance.

And that's why all pros use IEMs at the majors in CS:GO!!! :) Because IEMs have the best positional audio of all the things in environments when you wouldn't be able to hear a thing without them.

Sennheiser HD 558's. And a FiiO Olympus external AMP and DAC. You can get more expensive stuff but it's what I use and I'm not upgrading until they both break.

That's *almost* as bad as the people that recommend the M50X.

It's not as bad, but pretty generic enough i suppose.

k7xx is a great option if you have a smaller head size. For amp dac, you could grab smsl

My point was mainly that they were saying "here's what I have. It's the best thing I've ever heard, and based on that, I'm going to recommend it. It doesn't matter if there are things that sound significantly better in your budget, this is what I'm recommending." that's what I have a problem with. It doesn't actually help the OP get the best for their money, and that's the same reason that I have a problem with people recommending the M50X, which is why I also have a problem with that post.

People don't like it when one recommends something because they have it and like it.

The only thing I like and have that I'd recommend (until something does come better based on measurements, perceived sound, and comfort) is the AKG K612 Pro.

Other than that, if someone wants to take gaming seriously in terms of soundwhoring, AKG K701 (I cringe everythime these cans are on my head... because it has that near-empty bass and really dry like nuts. Probably more dry than the already really dry HD800, which I don't really like that much anymore).

The best headphone, IMHO, is the HE-500. Its flawed in comfort and sound quality, but its the flaws on the sound quality (I mean, these cans are FAR from neutral for its price bracket since release and how much they are right now) that just give me a very vivid idea of what its like to get a buzz from cocaine... without the cocaine rage (sort of). I wouldn't recommend these if someone wants absolute neutrality for its price tag.

I see. Still most people recommend the HD 558's for being neutral and for being very comfortable. The Fiio E10 after doing some research has been updated. Looks like AMD and DACs have come a long way since I got my E10. I am thinking of getting the SMSL M2.
