Ya but why did the other countries change it? there is only like 1 letter missing/changed in each.

also

mom and mum

(Mom is correct imo it comes from Mother not muther)

It's the way it's pronounced over here, you wouldn't say moh-ther.

It's a locality type thing, we've kept to the real spellings of things, Americans, considering at colonial times, didn't have an education system to speak of they resorted to spelling things phonetically I.E the way things sound.

Aluminium and Aluminum is a good example,

Aluminium (al-u-min-i-um)

Aluminum (al-oo-min-ee-um)

Simpler phonetics and simpler spellings for a simpler people

It's just different dialects. For example, North America was colonised (Or colonized) by us Brits, which is why they speak English. This was a long time ago. At that time, we both spoke pretty much the exact same language. As I'm sure you're aware, language changes over time and as N. America and Britain weren't in direct contact all the time, the languages changed in different ways, therefore explaining the difference in accents and dialect.

Ya know, I never noticed the different spellings of Favorite. Weird.

Where's the "ee" in there?

I, being from the USA, use the Aluminum version. And I say it: "Al-oo-mi-num".

*confused*

I've heard several reasons for the US changing up the spelling.

- To be as different as they can from Britain

- To save ink while printing newspapers and such

- Spelled phonetically

I'm not sure which one is true.

Americans that say 'Aluminum' really annoy me. It's 'Aluminium' - 'Aluminum doesn't exist, Aluminium is an ELEMENT.

Also kind of unrelated, but 'there', 'their', 'they're', 'your', you're'. Use them properly.

American English is a bastardisation of the language.

I feel that is uncalled for as I did not use them incorrectly.

While we're on the topic of spelling, "Spellings" is not a word.

Well, it follows the rules of grammar, so I am going to go with it is a word. :| And Google disagrees

Also, an example of how to use the word spelling from Meriam-Webster:

The words “made” and “maid” sound alike but have different spellings.

Am I taking this seriously enough? Spelling is serious business. Stop picking on my ghetto United States of American slang. Ya dig?

"Spelling" is a mass noun (uncountable noun).
