what do you prefer and why?

i reckon it boils down to personal opinions. so that means no right or wrong answers but i'm still curious to know.
my curiosity actually sparked last night after a drunken debate with some mates  :P

I guess the only reason you wouldn't want a side panel is if your case is completely hidden somewhere under your desk where you can't see it. Even a messy case looks awesome to someone who knows nothing about computers!

I like to show off my internals, it's also just a cool factor for me.  My cables are sort of messy but I still like it.

but would you go as far as converting a non-windowed case to a windowed one?

It depends.

I think some cases really suit a window, and if the case isn't too 'wild' I'd like having the window there. That's why I'm getting the Define R4 for my first build - I want the case to be pretty much a blank canvas (but a nice one! :)) with a side window to show off the hardware inside.

But I do like some cases without windows too. I've been speaking lately about possibly getting an Apple Mac Pro case in which I plan to build just a cheap media computer.

I vote yes.

Nothing beats seeing the fruits of your labour.

Fruits of your labor? Really?! How long to did it take you to "build" your system? Maybe one or two hours at most (baring any problems), maybe a couple more for a custom loop? Not like you actually built the components yourself.

ok let's quantify it, fractal define mini. i wonder how much effort & money 'windowing' would cost, is it worth it?

also aren't windowed cases normally more expensive, an argument that arose last night was that extra $$$ could be used for other performance components like cooling etc

Well, I don't actually have a system of my own at the moment. And yes, building a PC isn't particularly the hardest thing in the world, but it still requires some time, effort, research and careful thought to create a system that you'd stare at and go 'Ah yes, I built that.'.

Additionally, when I get a job, I'm pretty sure I'll have to put in weeks of work, before I can afford parts to build a PC. So maybe that's what I meant.

For most of us, yes, but for someone who, say, sleeves his/her own cables?  That's many, many, many hours.

Yes and no. I think for a system that uses air cooled, there is no really point in looking inside the case. Which is why my R4 right now is windowless.

But if you watercool? Then you have something pretty to look at. I've heard from many people that having a window is a problem for noise, but when you water cool, then usually you have less noise as your fans are low RPM (depending on the build).

Just my opinion.

I like both depending on the case and window style.

My build is nice, clean and silent in my windowless case :)
