Yeah I know, and oh. OK. I am a newb at linux and stuff like that. Ummm, If I May ask, Do you know the setup process garbage for both, cause again I am fairly new to this stuff.

FreeNAS isn't linux, its BSD (its based off off FreeBSD)

Installing FreeNAS: http://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_install.html

OwnCloud on FreeNAS: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/drkks-definitive-guide-to-installing-owncloud-in-freenas-or-freebsd.19605/

It seems harder than it really is. I'm sure there's lots of youtube tutorials if thats more your thing.

Also make sure your hardware is FreeNAS compatible

Hi, I probably will be doing a new storage build later this year. Just a basic machine that can handle whatever stuff I have to throw at it. But, I am basicially torn on either to get a NAS built or a cloud server.

This will probally used for some file sharing,  and just basic day to day general use.

However, like most servers and NAS, I will be running it 24/7, so If you would, I would need some help with some drive selection.

Also should I run a FreeNAS box, or OwnCloud, as I want all of my devices to have access to data and such, but don't know if file transfers will be slow if I use a cloud, so I just need yours guys help, as I am pretty new to this.

2TB will be plenty just so you know, and im not planning on spending a fortune on drives, no RAID, no UPS, just one reliable drive to have all of my shit.

I thought I had some money... Oh wait... I spent it all ;(

Owncloud is for cloud sharing. Freenas is for a file share generally

FreeNAS is an OS

OwnCloud is an application.

You can run OwnCloud on top of FreeNAS
