Teslas for folding

It looks like you need a minimum of Windows XP and a Pentium 4 processor for their newest client. If you use one of the older versions you might be able to get away with something as low as a Pentium 2 or 3. I can't guarantee that there will be any workunits available, but as of a few years ago they were still supported. So, technically yes and no. Worst case scenario you would need to install a new OS but the hardware should be fine.

It has a P4 in there and I have a 120GB SSD with XP on it from an earlier project. I think I should be good, but I'm not gonna try. I might use some janky SATA to IDE adaptor and chuck the SSD in there for general use as my HDD's on the way out, but I certainly won't try F@H on it.

Unlikely, as I don't think the software is supported on a 16bit OS. Still, you can try.

At any rate, you can resort to Boinc, that is sure to work.

It's a 32-bit OS, it just runs a 16-bit OS (MS-DOS) along side it. unlike Win3.1 which was 16-bit DOS masqueading as 32-bit with a UI.

Ok, I'll go with a couple 970s then. The heat really isn't a concern for me. I live in south-east Australia, where you're lucky to get a top of 18C. But what I'm still not clear on is if you could use Xeons for folding. I heard one guy say you couldn't use them or Teslas, but I'm hearing a lot from others to the contrary. So, can you, or should I just go with a Haswell-E processor?

you can use a xeon if you want, but it wont make any difference. i would got with a the i7 5930k if you have 3 or more gpus. although cpu folding isn't very good now so i only run gpu's

Do you think a Dual 10-core Xeon setup would make much difference?

Do you think a Dual 10-core Xeon setup would make much difference?

Yes, it'll waste a ton of money. For the purpose of point gathering, CPUs are useless.

Use them for things that actually need CPU, such as the multitude of CPU-only Boinc Projects.

no because there are no good work units for them any more. cpu folding isn't efficient performance or cost wise.

Ok, well I guess it's time for a second draft then, would a Quad-core be fine for this, or is X99 the way to go?
