It essentially picks up an existing wireless signal, then sends the same signal through its own access point. It does have drawbacks though. Boosters, repeaters and extenders are essentially the same thing, but they all reduce bandwidth compared to the original signal**. It's just an inherent limitation for how they work. Having an Access Point that connects via an Ethernet cable can give the same, wider coverage that a repeater offers, but it doesn't reduce the bandwidth. 

 

** You could think of it, kind of like Chinese Whispers. The more the signal is repeated, the less bandwidth there is on the repeated signal.

Guys. there are other repeaters not just wifi. I use hdmi and usb repeaters.
