Asus Maximus VII Impact iROG3 update after power loss

Hi everyone,

I'm from Germany but i love LinusTechTips and its community, so i decided to ask for help here :)

So please excuse bad English, if necessary.

My problem:

I bought an Asus Maximus VII Impact motherboard for my new ITX built because of its features, and cause i had good experience with Asus yet.

After i had everything put together and did the first boot, everything worked fine.

I haven't done a fresh installation of Windows, just kept my SSD with windows already installed (also on a Z97 Mainboard).

I use a switchable power cord to turn off all the devices like PC, monitor, speakers etc.

This can also be switched over internet via an Arduino i set up myself, so i can turn on my PC from wherever i am and connect to it via VPN.

Thats why i set the PC to turn on after AC power loss in the BIOS, that worked fine with all the mainboards i had so far.

The Maximus also turns on when i switch the power on, but everytime i do that, it starts updating "iROG3", whatever that is.

The exact massage is:

________________________________________________________

iROG3 is updating.
Do not shut down or reset the system to prevent system bootup failure.

15% complete

________________________________________________________

This takes about 2 hours, then reboots and boots into Windows just fine.

But when i then turn off the power, the next time i turn it on again, the same problem occurs.

If i leave the power turned on, and just press the power button to start the PC, everything works fine.

I have read about this problem many times, but often it's about a loop always starting the update again after 100%.

In my case, after the update is completed, the PC boots into windows normally.

The reason why i opened another topic is because there was no real solution, and this might be a special case with the power switch thing.

I did various BIOS updates, i had 2601 installed by default, then updated to the latest 2801, no change, then downgraded to 2701 and back to 2601 again, the problem always stays the same.

After BIOS Updates, it also updates iROG1 and iROG2, takes about 1min each, but not iROG3.

Does anyone have an idea what i can do?

Or does anyone have the same mobo and can reproduce the problem?

I hope this can be solved somehow, so i don't have to remove the MB just for RMA.

My specs:

It seems like the problem exists on every VII Impact.

I received another one today and already tried, but it behaves the same way as the first one.

I will try to contact Asus, maybe this can be solved with a new BIOS update.

Hello everyone having this crazy iROG3 updating.

I have a Maximus VII Impact and encountered this iROG3 updating nonsense and ASUS tech support is no help.  I think I have finally figured it out.

First, 3 hours of updating is a lot of data transfer.  Where is the data stored when the computer is not even running. The only memory available it the BIOS chip.  The BIOS chip is only a few MB.  It has to be running is some endless loop.

All these late ASUS mother board has the added features of (1) BIOS Flashback and (2) ROG connect.  You can flash the BIOS without turning on the computer (just with a plugin AC, power supply connected to the mother board). The BIOS file must be renamed appropriately and stored in the root directory of an USB flash drive and inserted into the USB port at the back I/O plate marked ROG connect.  If a mouse or keyboard inadvertently inserted into the USB port that is reserved for ROG connect, it will trigger this crazy iROG 1,2 or 3 updating loop. If that happens, power down the computer, clear the CMOS, make sure no device is connected to the ROG connect port, may be also avoid the KEYBOT usb port as well. Reboot and you can access the CMOS setup. These two USB ports are usually just beneath the PS2 kb/mouse port. ASUS should put a cap on these ports.  They work as USB port once the computer is running!

This issue drives me crazy.  Checked the back of my PC to move usb devices out of the 2 ports as you mentioned, however I dont have anything connected in those 2 ports, but it still occurs for me!

I have 1 usb hub which is connected to a single usb 3.0 port on the maximus board & keyboard and mouse are connected to that.

Surely theres a way to disable this bios update somewhere in the BIOS settings???
