Hey guys, just a little curious about how this works, I've been gaming on PC for a long time and have built several PC's of my own. This seems to always occur, and I've dealt with it for a long time and it still isn't a huge disturbance for me, I just want to know the cause :) So with many games I get over 60fps since I own a GTX 980, and for all games the fps stutters whenever i get over 60 frames. I know VSync caps the frame rate and messes with fps so I usually turn it off, but when I see stuttering I try it out and it's a lot smoother but at times it dips below 60 frames... Can someone explain to me what's happening and if there is any reasonable solution or is this just something I have to deal with? I have a 60Hz monitor btw!

well, turn V-Sync on, or alternatively get a 144Hz monitor or a G-Sync monitor I guess.

It's likely a combination of screen tearing and the frames being rendered over different intervals.

 

e.g. the monitor has one frame, it moves on to the next one, but while it's doing that another frame has been sent by the GPU. that frame is discarded so the monitor has to wait for a new one. (purely speculation but it makes sense in my head)

 

You could OC your monitor with the custom resolutions in the Nvidia drivers. I managed to get a pretty generic monitor up to 72Hz and it's made a significant overall improvement since the monitor can now render over 60FPS, it has a buffer zone. It's also possible to set frame targets in some/most overclocking utilities, which will adjust the clocks according to the current FPS (reduce them when you are getting over whatever FPS you set it to)
