Okay I'm going to be testing for my A+ certification soon and I need some advice. I know the test covers all the topics in the courses I've taken but should I be focusing more of my study time in certian areas? Most of the practice tests I've taken are pretty common knowledge to me but I am worried they'll like throw a curveball in that I might have covered but kinda passed over/focused less time on. Any advice or study strategy would help a ton!!

If your doing about the potato industry, then it would be great if you knew about the west bengal potato farmers who committed suicide.

But seriously, whats the test on?

Whoops thought A+ was enough to put in title. It's the COMPTIA A+ certification

Make sure you know the old hardware, they like putting that in. Other than that it is mostly general knowledge for someone who is into tech

Okay like how far back should I go in terms of old hardware? Like I know most of the modern stuff like the back of my hand. But I'm not as confident with like pre DDR3 tech. I know how to like assemble old pcs. But like would they ask like what's the pinout for a ribbon cable? That stuff I've got no clue on.

How have you studied for it?

Yes I've been studying plus doing practice tests. I just want input from people that have taken it. You know cause things I've focused most of my time might be only covered in a few questions and the stuff I didn't focus as much time into could be most of the questions.

It's been a while sense I took the course. I took it at the time not specifically for the certification but mostly to learn more about build my own pc and cause I had to take a tech class as a Gen ed requirement. Didn't really focuse on tech specifically as my degree is in welding. Just figured hey I can take a class that I can use to build a pc or I can take some boring other class I had no interest in.

Sucks a bit, but the newest version is 2012 as far as i know.

Will certainly teach you the foundations and fundamentals of everything, but afaik it obviously won't mention newer things like USB3.1, Type C, new chipsets n stuff.

The components of a computer are only a small part of the exam. You need to know everything covered in a 801/802 book to pass.

The A+ test is a point based test with no right or wrong answer. They're all technically correct with 1 being the best answer. You get points just for filling in the circle.

That being said the A+ test is a joke of a test focusing majority of the questions on troubleshooting techniques and customer service. At least that's what it looked like when I took the test.

When I took the test there was very little networking related questions and no programming questions.

I only studied the first couple of chapters and forced myself to do the test before they stopped offering the permanent certification. Now you have to renew every 3 years while mine is lifetime :P  I am pretty sure anyone can pass that test with ease.

Good luck on your test!

I don't think there's any programming on the test but there is a lot of material you would only know through memorization. That's really what the test is along with basic knowledge you already have.

It's true the test is relatively easy, but better to be safe than sorry!

Last I checked, it was going to before Pentium 1 era.

Just be aware that half the stuff they will ask you about, is completely obsolete today.

Last time I did an A+ related test was for an interview 3 years ago and they still had questions about ISA slots, IDE hdd and fdd connectors and Windows 2000. But at least it was basically just identifying the connectors

A+ is basic computer hardware and software, the only network knowledge you need to know is how to change an ip address. Network topologies and standards are covered in the N+ course

Okay software as in like what? I know hardware like the back of my hand. But software/programing I'm totally clueless about.

At most there will be a couple Access Database questions about querys and reports. Access its pretty easy though.

they really like putting in questions about "how many of ____ are in a ____ ".

I think the most in depth question I had at that level was like "billy sucks at computers. He fixed this thing wrong, tell him how badly he fucked up and then fix it for him"

You should know the OSI Model and all its definitions too. On my test they raped that subject.

I passed both sides of the A+ test first try. If you're into computers, you probably know most of the stuff anyway, but I did study test dumps, made it easier.
