Greetings My Fellow TechTipers,

Well, we meet again, my fellow technological humanitarians :D

I would care to pose a rather brief question, I was wondering as to how someone could verify the compatibility of a graphics card and PC motherboard?

I'm unfortunately not technologically savvy enough (as you tech lifesavers are) to even know where to look. Although, I do believe that you must look at the PCI-E lane on the motherboard.. or something..

Thank You for Reading,

-Will.

Thanks for reading!

Just put the motherboard model number in here and I can have a look for you. Chances are its gonna be a new gen PCIE in which case even PCIE 2.0 will run most new cards at max

PCIE lanes is a CPU thing.

It's more about PCIE gen slot. But generally if your PC was made in the last 7 or so years, it will work with new GPU's (not saying it would work good with your 7 year old CPU, just saying it would work)

I mean unless you are grabbing a gen 1 core I series or before it will work without any issues.

Sorry, I am new to this but let's say a GTX 980 has a PCI Express 3.0 and a Z97 Motherboard also has a PCI Express 3.0, does that mean that it's compatible or is it something else that decides if it is compatible or not?

They are both PCIE gen 3, so yes.

So, the compatibility completely depends on the pcie generation?

No.

A modern PCIE Gen 3 GPU will still work in a PCIE Gen 2 motherboard. PCIE Gen 2 slots are just slower, so you may not get the full performance out of your GPU (probably not the case)

Hi,

Both are PCIE 3.0, completely compatible. Very nice components you have lined up!
