VGA is outdated, and doesn't really have any serious advantages as a technology. DVI is the standard right now. HDMI is a modified version of DVI which carries audio and still gets version updates as video standards advance (the DVI consortium on the other hand disbanded a long time ago).

Either HDMI or DVI from your list in the OP, But more recently DisplayPort is becoming the standard. At the end of the day whatever you monitor supports will work.

The only cables that can handle high framerate or high resolution content are:

Displayport

HDMI 2.0 (rare)

dual link DVI

Everything else can't do it, including HDMI 1.4 which is super common. Remember, all of these signals are digital signals so quality doesn't vary between connections or cable cost. If you have a standard 1080p 60hz monitor, even HDMI 1.4 will be fine. However if you have a 4k 60hz monitor, HDMI 1.4 will only deliver 30 hz. Also HDMI cables don't have version numbers. It's the actual connectors that matter. The cable didn't change, and both the GPU and monitor must support 2.0 to get 2.0 speeds. For instance, even if you have a HDMI 2.0 GPU, you will not be able to feed an Asus VG248QE at 144hz with an HDMI cable because the monitor is only HDMI 1.4.

What resolution and refresh rate? At 1080p 60Hz, honestly it doesn't really matter, but above that, you go past the limits of VGA and will want DVI/HDMI for 1440 or DP for 4K.
