i want to have near max performance on 1080p, (on the latest games: Witcher 3, fallout 4, etc)

but the ability in a couple years to upgrade (to 1440p or even 4k).

option1: buy a cheaper gpu now( for 1080p) and buy a newer one later (for 1440 or 4k).

for example a r9 290x or gtx 970

option 2: buy the latest gpu and upgrade to dual gpu with crossfire/SLI when i need more performance

ex. gtx 980, r9 furyx

Taking into account the release of direct X12: amd vs nvidia?
