I am wondering if a dac makes a big difference in audio quality and do you need an amp for your dac? How much do I have to spend to get notable differences than the realtek audio on my motherboard.

You should get the headphones first, then if you feel the onboard has problems or if the volume isn't loud enough then you can get a,mp/dac.

BUt get the headphone before you even consider getting an amp/dac
