AMD VCE H.264 encoder recording

I recently heard about this and I'm kinda interested to learn more about it. I have a Radeon HD 7950 which I think is supported, and it would be nice to get that load off my CPU since it's just a G3258. So what exactly takes advantage of this little bit of hardware?

OBS supports it. I think it also works with FFsplit and XSplit.

It offloads the work from the CPU to a dedicated chip on the GPU that is specifically designed for the H.264 codec and is extremely efficient in doing things with that codec compared to doing it with your CPU. It allows your CPU to do other more important thing rather than decoding video (and it also saves battery life on mobile devices).

 

Edit: Just realized I don't think I'm answering your question... I think any somewhat recent application should be able to support hardware H.264 encoding.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Well OBS sure as hell isn't using it. I feel that 60%+ utilization is a little bit stupid.

I looked at that before making the topic, but this is why it won't exactly work, apparently.

 

 

 

As of now, with Drivers 15.7 and above, OVE is no longer possible since it has been phased out to be replaced by AMD's AMF(Framework) entirely.

It still works, but only with AMF as other older methods have been deprecated. Just make sure you have the latest drivers, and the latest OBS VCE branch, and have it setup properly.

 

ie:

Since OVE no longer works with 15.7 AMD drivers, make sure that only AMF is checked from the encoder tab of OBS. unchecking both can cause "Failed to Initialize"

 

GCN 1.0 cards still works with AMF. If you're having trouble you can always rollback your driver install and use OVE instead.
