I'm looking for a ups, the power doesn't go out often but I want some backup when it does, I'm not looking to spend a lot, max 180$ cad without tax.

I'd be plugging in my pc which has a 4690k and a 970 so I'm going to say it uses around 300-350 watts under my typical load, and I'd be plugging in my fish tank pump and heater. So how many watts would I need and what brands are reliable ?

I was thinking about this http://m.ncix.com/products/sku/54232/1245

Any thoughts ?

I would only need 2 battery backup plugs, one for the pc and one for my pump, if I was going away I'll just unplug tge pc and plug in my heater instead or if the power goes out I'll shutdown the pc and unplug and do the switch

Never EVER plug a heater into a UPS. It will scream at you, literally. That one you linked seems quite good. Seriously, don't do it.

I have an APC 750W unit, don't remember the exact model.

When in doubt, re-format.

Also, I have my PC, monitor, and router/modem on my UPS so that even if i'm in the middle of a round in game, I can finish up before I need to quit. Also works great for watching netflix on my PC during power outages.

When in doubt, re-format.

I would not plug in a fish tank pump and heater it would drain it within minutes if it's very powerful , that UPS would be more than sufficient for your PC however, and is a good quality APC unit.

well how would my pump drain more power then my pc ? It's a little 10 gallon tank with a small pump and I think a 10-20 watt heater that barely goes on depending on my room temp

It will beep angrily at you if you plug in a heater.

My GF decided to plug a space heater into my UPS once while I was at work and she said that it started going nuts and beeping like mad. I told her kindly to never touch the UPS again.

When in doubt, re-format.

Anything for APC or GE or tripplite oy should be fine as long as you get one to match what you intend to power. Like a 600w psu PC would work fine with the one you chose but if you had 1000W PSU and were running it it may turn off before you can shut down

I'm running a 600 watt psu in my system

Not necessarily the total power draw, but the noise and type of draw. ALL ups's will clearly state to never plug in any heating devices into it.

Hell, my 47" TV didnt like being plugged into the UPS, whenever the power went out, and the TV was running off the UPS, it would make a terrible buzzing sound (The tv, not the UPS)

When in doubt, re-format.

I see, but would it still be fine for a little fish tank pump to run off of it ? http://www.amazon.ca/Marineland-Penguin-Power-Filter-20-Gallon/dp/B0007ZS230 it's this thing

If it's that small your should be good I was thinking of very large tank heaters, with your system and peripherals all plugged in.

Lol I read those books in 9th grade and watched the movies in the mid 80's. Haven't thought about that line since 1984 when I was in the USMC. Talk about a ding, ding, ding moment.

It's always a good day if you woke up breathing.
