Unreal Engine 4.9, DirectX 12 capable right meow!

ThE_MarD

Heyyo,

So... I tried searching to see if anyone already posted this? But I can't seem to find any so... lemme know if I make a boo-boo please. :P

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfTwJOc-3Ng

Someone ported that fancy Elemental demo of Unreal Engine 4 to work on the DirectX 12 version of Unreal Engine 4.9. I'm definitely gonna try this stuff out at home and try comparing it to the DirectX 11 version.

Here's where to download the original DirectX 11 version:

http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2368/unreal-engine-4-elemental-tech-demo/

Unreal Editor v4.9 also lets you run it in DirectX 12 mode:

https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?79514-Unreal-Engine-4-9-0-amp-Windows-10-How-do-i-start-up-my-project-using-direct-x12

So I'm gonna try that stuff too and see if I can get Unreal Tournament to work in DirectX 12... it'll be interesting to see!

NVIDIA also just released a newer driver today v355.60. It talks about that Ashes of Singularity which is also a DirectX 12 game. Maybe it'll help too with Unreal Engine 4.9?

Dreams do come true!? ;)

Ooo! I'm porting my game over when I get the chance. This will be a great performance boost and selling point for my kickstart.

YAY! Finally seeing some use out of the new API.

Why can't I update my driver to 355.60?

Hmm, maybe try using display driver uninstaller to nuke your current one and then donwload and install to latest via the geforce.com/drivers website?

http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/

  • Download the program, extract it and restart in Safe Mode (When you run RRU it will ask you to restart in safe mode, say yes)
  • Run DDU, Select "Clean & Restart"
  • Once back in regular boot? it'll detect and install basic display drivers (DON'T select "Clean Install" under the custom settings, it sometimes has problems with SLI setups). Once that's done? Install the latest NVIDIA drivers for your GPU and then reboot
  • (Optional)Once rebooted? Enable SLI!
  • (Optional) Open up DDU (if it asks to reboot into safe mode? you don't need to, so say no) and then click on "Set Automatic Driver Installation to Default"

I opened GeForce Experience, checked for updates, nothing. I put it to include beta drivers and beta releases of GeForce Experience, still nothing. Is it because my GTX 760 doesn't even support DX12?

It already does support DirectX 12! :)

Only the GTX 400 series is still in development.

I remember seeing that at E3 a few years ago.

It looked so much better in 30 FPS...

OT: I can't wait for DX12 games to hit the market, I hope ARK gets an update for DX12 :D

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

Heyyo,

WHHHAHHTTTT?!?!?!??! MY GTX 760 SUPPORTS DX12?!?!??!??! YOU SIR JUST MADE MY DAY!

You're very welcome! :)

WOW! That FPS increase is INSANE! From 50FPS avg to 90FPS avg!

Indeed! Be sure to run both the DirectX 11 and 12 versions and post on here your results please! I'll still be a while until I get home... I'm hoping that my Two-way SLI setup works in DirectX 12 but alas, NVIDIA drivers so far don't like SLI in DirectX 12... maybe 355.60 adds support even though there's nothing about it in the release notes but I got my fingers crossed! :P

I am getting Unreal as we speak. I will definitely post some results, hopefully ShadowPlay doesn't downgrade my FPS too much :P

Heyyo,

Hye why is it downloading 4.8.3 and not 4.9? Does 4.8.3 support DX12?

Hmm, check this please?

I have a (really) old GTX 560 Ti. I was surprised to see that it is supported by DX12  :)

Thank you kind sir.

You're very welcome too! Please post your results if you have Windows 10 and will run the elemental demo! We should almost start a thread on this stuff... kind of like the Unigine Valley thread and that Google Spreadsheet.

Okay. So, I've tested the elemental demo, and it seems okay-ish...

Highest FPS: 46

Average FPS: 30-35

Lowest FPS: 11 (the ending, when the ice guy appears)

Also, when a bunch of dust particles show up, it goes to 20fps.

Just to clarify, this was in DX11 mode.

Interesting! Well it is a lot of detail on the screen and you are running that classic but still good GTX 560 Ti. Any chance you could try out the DirectX 11 version too please? I'd be interesting to see how that scales in comparison. I linked it as well in my first post.

Got it, it's downloading right now.

Sweet! :)

Little bit of a question, I have the Epic Games Launcher open and I have two versions of Unreal 4 downloaded: 4.8.3 and 4.9.0 Preview 3. I downloaded the Elemental DX12 test but it look like it has nothing to do with the Epic Games Launcher. How do I launch the game in DX12 (as my CPU usage was only 40%) and DX11 (which I think it was running in)?

So my results were disappointing, although I'm sure I did it wrong. After verifying in dxdiag that I was running DX12, I created a batch file that contained the following string:

ElementalDemo.exe -D3D12

Before I ran the batch file I ran the application by itself, and I assumed it was running in DX11 mode as my CPU usage was ~40% and my GPU was pinned at 100% (specs in signature). I then ran the batch file (which means it's running in DX12) and immediately noticed an FPS drop by an average of 10FPS. The CPU usage dropped to ~20% and the Elemental Demo crashed within a minute or two. I still have more testing and more figuring out to do but so far it's a failure for me.

OK, so that first post was DX11, which I just realized *facepalm*

Here are DX12 results:

Highest FPS: 38

Average FPS: 20-23

Lowest FPS: 12 (again, the ending, when the ice guy appears)

Well, didn't expect that.

Are you sure? The one that has the 'improved version' text at the beginning is DX12 but the regular one you download from OP's first link is DX11.

Already did a comparison right here. DirectX12 performs...worse.

Somethin' seems fishy here. My tests yielded better results in my other thread but now I'm not so sure.

Edit: I think you have to two mixed up becasue the lens flare issue on the right one only happened in DX12 for me and a few others.
