Hi,

I have a Toshiba Canvio Desk 5TB external drive.   Is it possible to open up the case and remove the disk.  I would like to put it in an external drive bay with a Ethernet connection.  Thank you.

David

Theoretically yes it can most times they are either screwed together or clipped so in most situations you can pry the plastic case off but most likely it will be damaged in the process.

I do this at work all the time. You should be able to take the enclosure apart and get the disk out, which should then function any way that a regular hard drive would (i.e plugging it into your computer as a regular internal hard drive, using an external power adapter and a sata to usb cable, etc). Hope this helps.

A lot of the time depending on the external inclosure, you will need to break clips to open these. With a bigger one like that you might be able to open it without damage.

I have to agree. Everytime I have to pull out an external hard drive from an enclosure...the case usually doesn't make it. They aren't really meant to be taken apart.

Thanks for the fast replies.   I'm not worried about destroying the case.  I doubt I'll reuse it again.   I can't seem to find the internal version of this drive so it might not be worth it.  Oh, I was going to put it in a dual drive bay.   Thanks again.

Most of the internal drives with a regular sata data and power especially the desktop drives but some of the small 2.5" portable ones to save space directly solder on a USB3.0 port to the drive's PCB and any hardware needed.
