omg... give OLED already!

LG makes 55" 4k 60hz OLED TV`s @ 4000$ already, huge progress for OLED. Considering just 5 years ago a 30" 1080p OLED was 30000$, and had all kinds of issues.

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/55eg960v-201504224046.htm

It has 50ms input lag in game more tho...

If they made one 55" 4k OLED panel @ 120hz with a 0-120hz adaptivesync implementation with just a single dp1.3 connection and NOTHING else = they`d rip a new hole in the market how fast those would sell. Thats total artifact free motion right there.

But with all the current bloat and garbage stuck to that poor OLED glass... they have to drop the price to around 1k for me to consider it.

They might do something like that if Korea goes bankrupt again like it did in 1997.

Otherwise probably not.

Idk about 55" 4k at 120hz;

55" is huge :o Personally I would love to see a massive ultrawide with 120hz ( and acer is damn close with 100hz, might make me jump back to nvidia )

49ms input lag... yeah we still have a few years to go but it's nice to see progress.

Em... do you even know how input lag is created?

You talk like its something like resolution - where we need marginal improvements all the time to get somewhere. ITS NOT.

The display i proposed in the first post would have 1-2ms input lag.

The more connections you have on the back, and the more hardware and software is in the display - the higher the input lag. THATS how that works. The "smarter" the panel - the slower it is. I suggested a DUMB sceen - with just a single connection that goes straight to the display - no other hardware, no software of any kind.

21:9 OLED would be a fucking dream. I can only hope that LG will try again with a 21:9 OLED TV. 21:9 TVs didnt sell well the first time.

At least LG is both the biggest OLED manufacturer and the biggest 21:9 manufacturer. So we are definitely getting 21:9 OLED monitors as soon as OLED is cheap enough to come to monitors.

(Thats pretty much the perfect screen isnt it? - 5120x2160, 40-50" OLED, 200hz with 0-200 adaptivesync implementation, ONLY a single SuperMHL connection and no other hardware or software)

It'd make a nice decoration on the wall, but not very useful without GPUs equipped with Super MHL outputs :P

I'm planning on getting one of those LG OLED 55" TV's. 1080P at this point though. Much more reasonable in price and you get above 60hz. At that price point, even my Samsung Plasma has a hard time touching it. OLED is amazing but it still has it's ways to go in terms of black levels compared to a Plasma when both screens are properly calibrated.

That being said, it would be amazing for gaming. I don't think it would be much benefit in terms of productivity though since OLED screens seem to produce a vibrant, saturated color.

The main problem is the organic nature of the technology. Maybe LG knows something we don't know but how they managed to overcome the technology and create a TV (where most people expect to keep their TVs for at least 10 years) is beyond me. Using the same technology, Most I don't see why they couldn't come up with a panel (since most people keep their monitors for 5-7 years). Start slow with higher response times, lower refresh rates and then build up to a new line. Someone's got to be the innovator and they're in a good position to be the pioneers in this field as Sharp was with it's Plasmas.

Even if GPUs never implement superMHL, id still buy that ... and the most powerful mobile device that has superMHL and play gta3/half life1 era games only

Or have the BEST wall decoration

Well, first of all - when OLED displays black, it turns off the pixel - so you cant physically get a better black than that.

Secondly. OLED does not have different response times, unless you intentionally defect it somehow. All OLED has a 0.01ms response time for ALL color shifts, not just grey2grey - they one they advertise under heavy overdrive.... those GAMING LCDs have 5ms response times at the very best, TN and IPS equally. TN having "lower" response times is just marketing bullshit so they can keep selling TN garbage to uninformed people.

You're telling me the input lag is the only thing keeping their TVs from becoming really cool monitors? Wasn't aware it turned off the pixel. I believe Plasma does the same to render it's blacks. Pretty much anything without a backlight will be able to render black pretty well.

I believe what caused me to believe it was worse was one of the reviews I read on Amazon that state that particular TV has banding issues which cause the middle of the screen to exude some luminescence which keeps it from getting as black as it should be.

That review is either a lie or that unit is defective or something. OLED turns off its pixels which are meant to be black and it does it in 0.01ms, which is the same response time regardless what a pixel needs to do.

Also, OLED is the only technology that can turn off individual pixels. I dont know how plasma works, but CRT also has very high contrast and good blacks.

And, yes. Any of the OLED tvs could have all the electronics and software removed and just left a single connection display - it would have the same exact input lag as the ROG Swift and other top level gaming monitors.

Plasmas can get very dark, and although each subpixel does generate its own light like OLED, plasma TVs must keep the subpixels pre-charged or else they do not react quickly enough to signals. So they can get very dark, but they don't turn completely off.

I wasn't aware of this. How then is OLED able to achieve such quick response times so much so that it can afford to shut off its pixels?

It's a different technology, and that's one of its advantages :P
