hello techies,

My friend has a pc that he uses for gaming but is looking to upgrade his graphics card. His cpu is only an amd 6300 and he wants to get an nvidia gtx 970. I know this is overkill for his cpu and it'll throttle, but I don't know if he took my word for it or is going to upgrade anyways. All I was looking for was some confirmation to show him that he wouldn't benefit that much from a 970, and possibly a recommendation for a card he should get instead.

                                                                                      Thanks!

Better he get the card and keep it, and upgrade the motherboard and cpu later, then having a shitty gpu when he does. Only drop to a lesser gpu if he plans on upgrading with the saved money.

It's actually probably still worth it, unless he mainly plays games like DayZ or other CPU-bound titles. Just upgrade the CPU later down the road.

that's true, I just don't want him to be disappointed when he buys this card and sees a small increase in performance haha

Then just inform him rather than discouraging him, tell him it will be an awesome improvement, but he won't see its full potential until he upgrades his motherboard and cpu as well.
