that is because they do not sell that specific 4 core + HT Xeon in norway.... and not many places ship it here either, so no, you wont find a good xeon deal in norway, ever.

I believe the socket for Zen CPUs will be AM4... and I seem to recall hearing that in 2016 they will continue selling Excavator APUs. I suppose Exacavator APUs will be for the budget sector (like their current FM2+ lineup) selling at ~$75-150, while their new Zen CPUs will probably be priced much higher to reflect their more competitive performance.

The excavator APUs, known as Carrizo, is 100% laptop only.

The only upcoming FM2+ products in the pipeline that i know of is the A10 7890k and Athlon X4 870k

 

Last I saw Excavator desktop was in the roadmap for AMD and they planned to do APUs and Zen both in 2016

For a 110 bucks I got an A10 7850k with MSI a68h MB at microcenter.

The amount of info and bechmarks out there is amazing. Everybody and there grandmother have reviewed this and the 7870k.

It will run any AAA title out there.

It makes more sense then an I7 with twin titan x's or i5 gtx 980 hooked to a 1080 monitor.(way too common)

It will run on any PSU with a 4 pin atx conector and 170 watt output.

So far it has never needed a software patch from a game developer to meet the need minimum requirements. (cough....3258..cough...i3)

Insanley upgradable and scales extremely well. Anandtech article with various high end dGPU's.

SATA 3 and PCIe 3 on a MB that was basically free after rebate.

Consoles going from VLIW to AMD 8 cores will affect PC gaming. Halo 5 so far is an AMD only game. We in PC gamer land are left begging for table scraps from console gaming....again.

Microcenter + AMD = F***** amazing deals, especially FX 6300 + motherboard bundle for $100

Excavator was purpose designed for the 400 to 700 USD laptop market. It is targeted to those areas

 

you CAN NOT use Excavator in desktops, because it is designed like a GPU, while being a CPU. In short, the transistor layout is extremely dense, so voltage leaking and temperatures is a massive issue, This is why Excavator will only get a max TDP of 35w. Any higher clock speeds or voltages, and it will leak/overheat too fast.

 

Honestly, i was hoping so long for a Carrizo APU for desktops, but AMD killed it at Computex and E3 this year by cementing it in the laptop market only.

 

Only stuff going into desktop is the Kaveri Refresh, known as Godavari. Which is basically binned steamroller chips.

As APUs are going to be on AM4 socket the FM3 thing was ditched. Only AM4 (and FP4 for laptops)

@Majestic - Nah, just have no interest in putting the forums through another flame war. My point was this: AMD is still putting out CPU's, and Intel's are pretty much better across the board, so why go with AMD? For that, I've received useful, positive answers, one of which is actually relevant to something I've been considering (multiple cores + streaming at a lower cost for someone else - I've got a pretty strong Intel system myself).

 

That being said, pretty much all the feedback in this thread has been really useful. I used to be more familiar with AMD many years ago but pretty much have only used Intel since at least 2000, possibly earlier. But I can't just come up with ideas for my own systems when I have friends who need a new setup, and they can't always afford to spend a grand or more on a new box. So right now I'm looking for options, and reasons for going with different options. I know I have Intel preferences, but if there's an actual positive reason to go with AMD, I'd like to know what they are - and I've got that, thanks to a lot of intelligent people on here.

well  my main reason for use my A10 6800k in my actual build are...

 

- having 4 cores

- pass the 4000 mhz barrier "with my stock cooler" (i love this)

- having a "strong" iGPU (384 sp) for sell and change my real GPU in time (HD 7850 - DX12)

- and save good money for the next real GPU in mind (R9 380 - DX12)

 

 

and i did all  :wub: (i love AMD)
