Hello everyone,

Current CPU is an i7-5820k. Not overclocked

So I have 2 980ti's in the mail and heading my way.  My question is will I need to upgrade CPU for best results? I was looking at some reviews of my current CPU and some comments were made that if you are going to go SLI the 5930k is the better choice do to more PCI lanes. Now if I can get by with the 5820k im fine with that but if the performance is much greater with the 5930k then I must upgrade or i wont be able to sleep at night knowing I can get more out of the 980tis is sli. Im sure this has been covered but Im new to the forums and new to PC related things so please go easy on me. Or if you could point me in the correct direction to learn more about PCI Express lanes in general that would also be great as Im always trying to learn.

Thanks to every one who replied. I will be staying with the 5820 for a good while and Im glad i asked this question now I know dont believe everything you read in the Newegg comments. I will be posting picture of my rig in the General section when the Sli upgrade is done for any one who cares.

The 5930K would maybe give you like.. a few fps more. if any.

5820K is great for SLI 980 Ti.

Sli is still....weak.There are many games that won't take advantage of it, some that will perform worts and just a few that will take advantage.Right now what you have is enough since 80% of the games depend more on gpu's than cpu's so i don't see a reason to change what you have.

Why would you need to upgrade from the 5820K? Upgrading from a i5 4690K is pointless for gaming let alone a 5820K.

You have no reason what so ever to upgrade that 5820k to the 5830k from a performance and value point.

Paul's hardware just did a video comparing the 5830k, 4770k and 6700k and there was almost no difference in performance what so ever.

This is caused by games being GPU bound. Only exception is a couple of games like Arma III.

When in doubt: C4

Hey thanks for the quick replies.  Most of the games I play do support sli. Mainly going sli because im using a 144hz monitor at 1440p. My next step would be trying some OC i think, will try it after getting a water cooler.

Thats why i was asking.  I read that for best results in sli the 40 PCI lanes of the 5930k would be better compared to the 28 of my 5820k . But like Minibois said its not that big of a deal so I will be sticking with the 5820 for a good while.

Whoever said that is spreading false info. Linus did a video on PCIe lanes, your CPU is enough for 2 GPUs AND like a PCIe SSD or something. No problem.

Damn Newegg comments. Yeah I remember watching the video but that was a good while ago and didnt know what any of it meant. I think now would be a good time to go watch it again. Thanks every for the super fast replies.

Not true at all having that more PCI lanes isn't gonna improve anything just means you can have more devices like a Wifi adapters, sound cards, PCIe SSDs,etc.  i5s and i7s are still good for SLI and they only have 16 lanes.

The PC was built by a good friend of mine a while ago pared with a 980. Im only asking if its a big difference in performance in the sli department when it comes to PCI lanes and No i dont want to upgrade unless I have to that would be a waste of money and silly.
