OK, so:

Im going to buy myself a new graphics card and SSD for my rig as my gpu needs replacing and its about time I joined the SSD crew.

I also want to get Windows 10.

I also want to wipe my current hard drive so that I get a fresh start with my new system.

I also want to install Windows onto the new SSD - Im getting the free download.

My question is: What is the best way to achieve the new, updated system with Windows 10 running off the SSD and a wiped HDD.

Currently, my plan is to:

1.  swap out the gpu's while still only having windows 7 installed

2. Download the media centre thing and create an install of Windows 10 on a Flash Drive.

3. Plug in the SSD

4. Install W10 to the SSD

5. Wipe the HDD

Thoughts? am I wrong? will I break my rig?

You plan is sound. You left out one step between step4 and 5, you should have "ensure the new SSD is booting into windows before i wipe the HDD".

However and this is a big however, depending on your MOBO and other components and software you use, i am sure you will have Win10 issues just because the drivers for older systems are not fully Win10 compatible even though Microsoft has sated that Win8 drivers will be fine, i have found that just isn't so.

Ok cheers.

Hmm, ok, Im running on a socket 1155 mobo H61 chipset. So I probably will have some problems in that area. Im guessing they will get fixed over time? any advice for what to do in the mean time?

I really doubt that the MOBO vendor will put out any newer drivers for older MOBOs, especially 1156 and 1155 as they have concluded it is not produced anymore but i am sure Microsoft will continue to refine WIN10 with newer builds and make adjustments for compatibility for older systems.

I too am on 1155 and Win10 ran fine but with a few exceptions that really had nothing to do with the MOBO drivers but more with peripherials and the OS architecture itself...what does he mean by the OS architecture you might say, well for one the different tweaks i had for speeding up my system has changed or been excluded, so i will have to do some adjusting to get it correct, so i will do my adjustments on my secondary machine and when i get it right i will put it back on my main system.

Nvidia drivers are not so stable either

My advice is to try Win10 and check for your issues and also make a note of your Win10 serial so you can have it for later if you decide to go back to what ever OS you are on now but still have the option to put WIn10 back on if reports are that the Win10 newer builds are more compatible.

Ah Ok cool, hopefully it will work good for my mobo too. Fortunately im looking at an AMD based GPU so hopefully the drivers will be pretty stable for that. Are there any other areas where drivers are particularly shaky?

--cut---

Are there any other areas where drivers are particularly shaky?

That would be MOBO/peripheral specific and not OS related per say. For example, Microsoft has stated that drivers for win8/8.1 will work for win10 and that has been so in most cases but for some win8/8.1 drivers that were buggy on Win8/8.1 will probably have issues on win10, so it is hard to say what you may have issues with. For me all my MOBO 8/8.1 drivers worked well and i have no yellow triangles in my device manager on win10.

Many people have stated they have GPU/Internet/chipset/USB issues. There is a work around for the GPU, what i did was install the older 352.68 driver and that installed and worked flawlessly then i used Geforce experience to do the update and it worked.

Another thing i have noticed with the Win10 internet is that one second you would have full bandwidth and then then next almost none then right back up again, so for some reason you get these spikes and i am not sure why. How i checked this yo might ask....using... ping google.com -t in a CMD with administrator rights and when you watch the ping times you will see how one second it is 10ms then 87ms and then back to say 15ms and so on when normally i would get a steady 8ms or 9ms or 10ms pings.
