skylake broadwell or haswell?

is skylake with ddr3 worth it? or should I get broadwell or is broadwell not worth the price over haswell?

Basically, Skylake CPUs are not really different in terms of performance from the Devil's Canyon (Haswell Refresh) CPUs, i7-6700k is i7-4790k, and i5-6600k is i5-4690k, if you're on a tighter budget and already have DDR3 RAM that you'd like to keep, go for the Z97 chipset motherboard and pick an i5-4690k if you plan on gaming mostly, or i7-4790k if you need the hyperthreaded 8 threads.

will I need hyperthread 8 thread for multi tasking streaming live tv whilst gaming and light video and photo editing using photo shop and some other programs?

If you are doing ALL of those at once, then you are better going with the X99 platform to take advantage of the extra cores and threads.

There is no reason to go with "Broadwell" unless you are going to take advantage of the much superior iGPU. The actual CPU performance, in most cases, is on-par with "Devil's Canyon."

"Skylake" isn't much different -- look at the professional reviews for it. Depending on the games and applications you use, the "Skylake" i7-6700K can perform worse than the i7-4790K. Also, "Skylake" DOES NOT use regular DDR3 memory; it must use DDR3L (low voltage, 1.35V or less).

ah okay ill just get haswell then saves fuckin about with ram erm no I wont multi task them all at one ill either game or edit but I will always be streaming tv or youtube so

so basicly ill be streaming tv surfing web and playing game (3 screens plugged in) or editing watching tv surfing web again 3 screens

I some times play 2 games at once like swtor and wow lol

so for that do I need i7 or is i5 plenty?

I sold my fx 8320 to switch to intel as felt like a change

I'm keeping my r9 290 gpu

and I have a 650w xfx xtr power supply is that plenty of power with room to overclock a i5 or i7 deepening which I need?

@Ykno if you're seriously going to use your PC like that then pay the extra and get the i7-4790k. Although a i7-5820k would be better, the price of an X99 motherboard and new DDR4 RAM would be too expensive for your budget.

do you know a cheapish air cooler with 120mm fans min as my current xigmatex loki only has 80mm fans

also the i7 is £50 more so I think due to budget I'm stick with i5

Let us all hope that Dx12, our lord savior, will ACTUALLY let us use multi GPU configs, as promised.

Honestly, Broadwell has better thermals / energy consumption, equal performance, and tons better iGPU than Skylake. Oh, and it doesn't require new mobos / RAM, it's equal to Haswell (sort of). The only problem is the lack of availability... and maybe the price.

Hyper 212 Evo is a cheap cooler that should be enough to cool the i5-4690k. It's not a hot CPU itself. But this isn't the best choice if you want very high overclocks.

If you could get this one somewhere: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/SilentiumPC/Grandis_XE1236/1.html
That'd be the best bang for the buck, but it's hard to get outside Poland (where I'm from), I'm using it to cool an FX-8350 OC'd to 4,7gHz with max temp being 64 degrees after 2 hours of stresstesting. The best part: It costs the equivalent to 36$ in Poland.
