So, like the title says I'm planning on a $2000 USD workstation and gaming rig. Just to give you some info about what programs I'll be using and games I'll be running; I'm a heavy Adobe user and will use Autodesk applications from time to time, and I will be playing games light games like Torchlight and graphically intensive games like Crysis 3. I'll also explain why I choose certain products over others.

Here's a link of the parts that I'm considering: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1nLhU

If you don't wanna click on the link, heres a list:

  • Intel Core i7-4770k
  • Swiftech H220 Liquid Cooler Have to find a new one.
  • Asus Z87 Sabertooth
  • Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB 1600MHz
  • 1x OCZ 256GB Vector SSD
  • EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB
  • Be Quiet! Dark Power 850w 80P-Platinum
  • Fractal Design Define XL R2

-- Explantation of My Choices --

I choose the 4770k instead of something on the LGA2011 platform is because the features on the Haswell chipset out way what the x79 platforms offers. The Intel Quick Sync option is an added benefit since I'm going to be rendering a lot. Though overall the cost of the x79 platform is what pushed me the other way, I'm mainly going to be using app. with CUDA acceleration so I'll be utilizing the GPU majority of the time. The Swiftech cooler was chosen because I've used Swiftech products in the past and has pretty good marks according to Linus's tests. Should I even explain why I choose the Asus Sabertooth Z87 board. It looks really good in a case, overclocking on the Z87 boards from Asus very just a little bit in performance, and has a great warranty. I choose the Dominator Platinums because they look amazing, there are very little differences between RAM so ascetics are what it comes down too. I went with the OCZ Vector drive because it comes from a company that has IMO back-to-back made great SSDs, though if you have better drive in mind that is in the same price range go ahead post it below. The performance in most applications out today between the GTX 780 and GTX Titan aren't really that much, maybe a lot on a spec sheet. Plus I will be getting a second 780 to run in SLi, and then the difference between the two becomes even smaller. On a side not, the GTX 780 preforms really well in 2560x1440 even with only 3GB of RAM. Be Quiet! Dark Power 850w PSU because its good, silent, good warranty, and is 80P-Platinum. The XL Fractal is something I don't see around very much and most people go with the normal mid-tower version but I like full-tower cases.

I will be reusing some HDD from my current build and I already own the case too. So this will be my workstation and gaming rig for a while.

But i would choose HX1050 watt PSU, BECUZe its cheaper and it can support mroe stuff and good for future builds.

i knwo its overkill but cheaper with like 20 bucks and its quiet too

My experience with Corsair PSU haven't been that great, simply a lot of coil wine in my experience. Plus the 80 plus platinum certification was a selling point.

Don't see anything wrong, but if your budget is that big I would have gotten a bigger psu to be even more future proof

PC Specs:  2x GTX 550 ti in SLI - Intel i7 2600k @ 3.4Ghz - Thermaltake Overseer Case - 8 GB Corsair Vengeance Ram - 1TB Harddrive - 500 Watt PSU that came with my old prebuilt pc lawl -  ASUS P8P67 EVO

Peripherals:  Razer Deathadder Black Edition - Razer Arctosa Keyboard - Logitech G53 Headset

Cool song of the day: Chief Keef - Round da Rosey    Changed my profile pic again...                                        Mountain Dew is good. So are video games and music. Oh and unicorns.

The thing about getting a bigger PSU to be future doesn't make sense to me, since there is a trend with everything becoming more powerful but without having to draw more energy. So things are destine to become more efficient energy wise and huge psu are as much of a requirement as they used too.

Swifttech H220 Cooler isn't avaible anyore in the US due to patent problems , I suggest going with a Coolermaster Eisberg instead , it's the same idea you can expand the loop really easy and it performs similar to the H220 cooler.

Add an ssd of your choise , the vector is a GREAT choise but in real world performance you wont notice a difference between the vectore and the 840

this is what i came up with http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1nN1X the AX 760 will be sufficient (the AX 760 is manufactured by seasonic)

In my case it won't since I'll be running the 780 in Sli. Yes I could go with the 760 still, but that would be reaching the limits of the psu, and you never really want to use every single watt that the psu can provide because then there would be a huge power limitation. I did take in to consideration on who was manufacturing the psu before they get rebranded, and the seasonic psu are always great.

I was thinking about the 840 since samsung makes all of their own stuff. Didn't know that the h220 was blocked because of patents. That sucks. I'll do some more research then.

You are building all kinds of rigs.

In your head.

My AX750 used to whine a lot during low stress. But as soon as I started a game it shut up. Otherwise it was honestly a great PSU.

| GPU: GT 650M | CPU: i5-3210M | Excuse my language, sometimes I can be pretty vulgar.

The Coolermaster Eisberg cooler is an excelent replacement for it ( Looks and is even better IMO ) Onlt flaw is that is't more expensive :

cooler_master_eisberg_240l_prestige.jpg

You can see your coolant through the window so if you mount the cooler window facing up you can look at your coolant :P ( also if you will be watercooling the GFX cards in the future you can see the coolant through the tubing ofc) I reccomend Dual 770 for 2000 dollar buget as it performs really well and the saberthooth mobo has excelent gfc card spacing ( One slot left blank for better cooling  so the top card can breath too )

I'll put the Coolermaster cooler on the list. I would go with the dual gtx 770 but the performance between a single gtx 770 and a single 780 is substantial and but the performance with dual card solutions is at the point that convinces me to go with two weaker cards over one powerful cards.
