Noob question about gpu cooler

Go to solution Solved by dougdangger,

Reference pulls air from the opposite end of the card to where the display outs are, and spits the air out from the display terminal end.  Only choice for small cases, cases with poor ventilation, SLI (not all the time) and water cooling.

Non reference pulls air from the bottom of the case and expels it from the sides of the video card.  Hot air rarely exits from the back of the gpu.  It's usually expelled from the other fans of the case.  Good air flow is needed for non reference design.

I personally think reference cards look best.

Well that might sound dumb, but I was wondering in which direction non- reference gpu coolers push the air ( specifically msi twin frozr V models ). Are they blowing air from the case on the heatsink or they suck the heat from the heatsink and spit it in the case?

Depends on the GPU :P

Normally they suck air from the case and exhaust out the back of the card

They blow air over the heatsink. So, when the GPU is installed in a normal case orientation, the blow upwards (at the PCB).

most non reference cards spit the air back into the case.

its not normally an issue in cases with good airflow, but in smaller cases or ones with poor airflow it can cause the temperature internally to rise. which has a knock on effect with other components.
