I got my GTX 980 (zotac, reference) in october 2014, and for quite some time it get's way too hot for me. I cleared the dust and everything else, but it's idling at around 40 degrees with 70% fan... How can I cool it? I can't install a new cooler, there is no place for it. Also, I don't have place for watercooling. It needs to be the reference cooler. Should I replace it?

[Edit]: I didn't overclock it at all.

Refrence cards tend to be hotter than others but not sure what the exact numbers should be.

You neglected to mention the things that are actually important like your average ambient temperature, your case and your fan setup. That being said 40c isn't a bad idle temp and cranking the fan up will only cool it so much as an air cooled card can never be lower than your ambient temperature. Have you tried lowering your fan speed on the GPU to see how fast it has to be spinning to maintain the 40c temps?

ya thats not normal.  my reference 980-- fan is 26% right now and i'm at 33c idle WITH an oc in a 26c room.  not too sure what the problem is though.  can you feel the airflow coming out the back of the case?  is there good airflow in the case?\

edit: what are your load temps like?  that is the biggest issue

@Ostwind I have 2 120mm fans at the front of my NZXT Phantom 410, two 140mm fans at the top and one 140mm fan on the side panel. They don't interfere each other. My CPU is cooled by the Enermax Liqtech 120X with 2 120mm fans. My room temperature is about 20 degrees celsius. I have my own fan curve, so it spins at around 70 percent fan speed, I don't know the exact numbers...

@Old_Chicken Load temperatures are around 50 to 60 degrees celius with 100% fan speed. Lot's of air is coming out of the case.

thats great if your only hitting 60c at load...  you can probably turn your fan wayyyy down for idle like Ostwind said.   this is the fan profile I use for my 980 in MSI afterburner. not that it'll work 100% for you but maybe

The problem could be that the fan of my GTX 980 gets his air directly from above the GPU of my PhysX Card (GTX 750). Removed it, temps are now ~35 degrees idle with 50% fan...

that'll do it!! still not bad temps at all and I'd think you could maintain a good idle temp with a lower fan speed

Sounds like the 750 was close to the 980 which would explain the higher temps

@Ostwind Just above, like an SLI-Setup, just without bridge and enabled PhysX :)

were you seeing much of a performance benefit from having a 750 as dedicated physx?

^^ Higher temps for the top card are a fact of life in multi GPU setups and by extension setups that have large expansion cards. Though a 980 does not need a 750 for PhysX.

@Ostwind I know, but boredom is a curse for a nerd :)

You can get around the issue somewhat by moving the 750 as far down from the 980 as possible if you have the extra slots for it. Though the temps aren't an issue removing the 750 would be the best course of action unless you need it for monitors or something.
