DirectX 12 and VRAM, Does it stack?

no it doesnt

 

970 sli is better than a 980ti, unless the game scales bad.

Now that windows 10 is officially out, and DirectX 12 is officially released.

Does it stack on NVIDIA GPU's?

Would another 970 be better or a 980Ti Hall Of Fame? 

1. Games need to run using DirectX 12

2. Devs need to get off their asses and set DirectX 12 to stack vRAM.

It doesn't. VRAM stacking will probably never happen due to I/O speeds. PCI-E 3.0 is way to slow to allow that, and Copper has already been maxed out. In order to support VRAM stacking, the PCI-E interface would need to use something like Fiber Optics to allow enough bandwidth to even consider stacking VRAM.

Depends on resolution

Just 1080p, just looking for future proofing-ness because if 2 970's will stack which that looks like a no until game devs work on it, as the time being the extra VRAM with the 980Ti will be more beneficial because not all games will support DX12 right now

You should save money now and upgrade down the road to a single card when you actually need more power. At 1080p you won't need it for atleast one genertion and by then you could go for a titan. Unless you are playing Skyrim modded or GTA V. then go for 980 ti.

That is the way a Titan X/980ti should look like. Scratch that, all Nvidia reference coolers should look like that.

A game that uses SFR, it'll "stack". 

A game doesn't need to use DirectX 12 if the developers uses SFR on their game.

AFAIK Nvidia will have to modernize SLI to communicate through the PCIE slot. AMD has already said something about VRAM stacking in Crossfire

So in other words Nvidia needs a boot up the ass to actually catch up with AMD in 1 area (near 100% scaling should have been a big clue to Nvidia that AMD's bridge-less crossfire is far superior to bridged SLI and that SLI is pretty much dead).

Eh, multi-gpu systems aren't that common anyway. AMD really needs VRAM stacking because their Fury cards are limited to 4gb of VRAM. Nobody gets 2 980TIs and says "Boy, if only I could have 12gb of VRAM!"
