So, I started a thread about sata to USB adapters. Most of you recommend getting a two USB one, but those all take a month to get to me. Does enough power come out of a Lenovo g500s's USB ports to run it off of one USB?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

To be frank, I would advise getting one that has two USB ports on it, on the simple basis that should you need for whatever reason to connect it to something else, you can ensure it provides enough power without any issue.

Even if it takes a while to get to you, it is worth the wait.

No because USB 2.0 0.5A so therefore it should be able to push out up to 2.5 watts (considering if your laptop is using a 5V rail to power the USB)

A USB 3.0 puts out 0.9A so it would put out 9 Watts (Also considering you laptop uses a 5V rail to power the USB)

A Western Digital Cavair Blue can take up to 17 Watts on full load

So the answer is no

There's no way to tell without testing it but here are a few points:

- USB 3.0 ports can deliver more current for USB 2.0 devices too.

- There are USB Y-cables just for this reason

- Of the hundreds of cases I've dealt with, this applies to something like 99%: 7200rpm (and above, high performance) drives and won't work, 5400rpm (and below) and SSD will work.

- Very old drives won't work.

Good point, but the USB will bottleneck the transfer and the drive won't be anywhere near full load. It can work. This barely has anything to do with it but WD Blue is somewhat common disk in external drives. I know for a fact that Lacie used them in the Porche 2,5" drives that came with a single USB cable.

The simple answer would be to get a External USB Powered HDD

Damn straight! But I'm not in the business for simple answers. :D Here in Finland I usually recommend an cheap enclosure that doesn't come with a power adapter. They often go for 10€ a piece and accept old Nokia phone chargers. :)
