windows 10 product key

Atomicnerd64

I have windows 8 and I want to upgrade to 10( actually I want to install 10 on another hard drive). do I use the same product key as windows 8 or do I have to buy a windows 10 one? cause then it wouldn't be a free upgrade. or is it just that if I click upgrade on the microsoft tool it will upgrade this machine and all will be fine and I can't just do the evil pirate-ish thing I'm trying to do? (really I just want to try it out without any change on my current install)

What you are trying to do is not evil or piratish but i believe if you use your windows 8 key to activate windows 10 on another computer then that is the only computer you can use your 8 key to activate windows 10 on.

it will be the same system just other hard drive. [i'll unplug my current one and disconnect from the internet, just for a better chance if I try it(although if it requires internet connectivity to authenticate or something I'm screwed)]

As far as I know the windows key is bound to the motherboard since windows 8. So it doesnt matter if you switch drives...it s the MD that the key bakes itself into
