Well considering your in the US have a look at Monoprice they have cheap ethernet cables I hear. How far do you need to run it? also are you going to run it through the walls? Also what Category 5e, 6, 6a?

So I'm really new to networking. I want to have ethernet in my room for my PC, and I'm wondering how much this would cost.

Depends on the distance, cables are not typically that expensive, but if you need to run it through walls and such, then equipment for that could be a little bit of a pain to get.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I had a contractor in to run it through the walls which is probably the most expensive way to do it. But also the best option in the long run and also the only technically legal way to do it here in Australia if you're going through walls. So because US prices and Australian prices are hard to compare all I'd say is that that way of going about it? Was about $50AU/point. Which is about the same price or a bit less in AUD as an AC1200 NIC or an AV500 powerline kit.

I already have a wifi modem, but wifi isn't always on. So I want to have a router in my room with ethernet.

Wait so you want ethernet from your current router to a second one in your room? Is that correct?

If that's correct, then he'd be best off getting a wireless access point for his room.

I get that but does he also want ethernet access in his room as well?

If that's correct, then he'd be best off getting a wireless access point for his room.

But I don't want to pay for wifi. I just want a second router in my room for ethernet.

So you are looking to run a single ethernet cable from your main router to your room to then connect multiple PCs in your room by ethernet (but without wifi)?

If so then you should probably look at unmanaged switches. They are inexpensive and effectively act to extend the number of total ethernet ports on your router.

I purchased this one for my office and I'm very pleased with it, but many others will provide the same function and quality:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-GS305-100UKS-Gigabit-Unmanaged-Ethernet/dp/B00TV4A96Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438295816&sr=8-1&keywords=netgear+gs305

EDIT: As for ethernet cable CAT5e is very inexpesnive and should be perfectly fine for most uses.

If it's sold as CAT5e it will be at least CAT5e quality, so look for the right length and style of plug and buy the least expensive.
