Installing windows 8 today

Go to solution Solved by DEDRICK,

It has to be Windows 8.1.  Windows 10 will be available for purchase next month

So quite a while back I bought a ssd for my father's pc, and now he wants windows 10. If I buy windows 8 today will he be able to upgrade to windows 10 for free in the near future or would it be better to wait untill windows 10 becomes fully available?

Right now windows 8 is cheaper than windows 10 and he would get a free update soon. Keep in mind that the os is tied to the motherboard, not the hdd or ssd.

Ok thanks guys.

So the best thing to do right now is buy 8.1 just to be certain he will receive the windows 10 upgrade?

You can buy USB versions of the OS from Microsofts store now, but USB and DVD versions for other online stores and retailers will be available mid August.

I'm kinda bummed the only way to get the DVD packaging is from B&H Audio and Video, I do collect boxed software and the DVD box is just better....  Of course all OS installs that I do has been from USB drives for ages, I think I even did WinXP installs that way about a decade ago.

Thanks guys for your fast replies.

I'll talk to him and see if he is able to wait for a little while and purchase windows 10 when its readily available. If he doesn't want to, I'll just buy windows 8.1 and hope for the best I guess.
