I've been running my i5-4690K with my GTX 970 for a little while now and I'm very happy with my configuration. Both my CPU and GPU are sitting at stock speeds. Whilst my GPU does boost up to 1392MHz, almost eliminating the need for a manual overclock, my i5 is still sitting at stock. All of my games 100% utilise my GPU WAY before I ever hit the limit of my CPU.

So, in any given video game scenario, would overclocking the CPU see an increase in performance even if it's not bottlenecking the GPU?

I ask this because my FX-6300 from my old rig used to cause stuttering in video games, even though the CPU didn't report 100% utilisation.

I'm running an FX4300 at 4.2GHz (lazy to further OC it) and a 270X and I'm getting stable 60 FPS in World of Warcraft (VSync is on, else it would be all over the place between 55 and 100 FPS).

I haven't had any games lag or stutter in the past few months, even at full shinyness. Admittedly I play at 1680x1050, so that might count a bit when it comes to GPU loads.

 

Not entirely sure if overclocking the CPU will help by much in your case

It will improve performance. The CPU will never hit 100% in a game, but the faster it can "think" the faster it can pass data around to the places where its needed. That being said, even at stock the i5 is pretty quick. I would try and overclock your GPU as well though, even though it is boosting well, there will be more in it, and that will net you a pretty nice improvement if you can push the card further.
