GTX 970m with 6gb of Vram !?!? how do I test Vram ?

givingtnt

so. I just tried my gs70 stealth pro the other day (won't get it back till the 15th of august tho.) and well it has 6gb of Vram.

so. here is my thing : if the 970 can't take more than 3.5gb  then the 970m should be ok with the 3gb it comes with.
but. this one comes with 6GB  ....  how do I test this ? how is this even normal ?

I really want to test this to the max. if anyone has any ideas on how to test the Vram and get some kind of data out of it. please, let me know !

yhanks !

It's called marketing. I'm pretty sure there actually ARE 6gb of usable vram, but on a 970m more than 3 are completely useless.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

GTX 970 and GTX 970m are different. And the 970 has 4GB!

The GTX 970m can have up to 6GB vRAM. (Which makes no sense, because the 970m is not that powerful)

thats why I didn't bother at first. there are 6gb. but. how can it even work. it tells me its avalable.

anyway. thats far rom what Ibought the laptop for anyways. hell. msi might just be dumb. they gave me a driver CD with a laptop that doesen't even have a dvd reader. xD

The 980M is the card closest to the 970, so you're probably fine there

I'd use the program that people initially used to see that the last 512MB were slower than the rest to check yours, but I can't seem to find it anywhere :/

I want to test it. and see if there is still a problem :P

970M doesn't relate to the 970. They are different chips(still GM204). The 970M does have 6GB of usable VRAM(PROBABLY?), but the actual performance of the chip will become an issue before you get limited by the buffer.

AFAIK Laptop GPUs ram is much slower and isn't GDDR5 thus is cheaper and easier to manufacture  more than desktop GPUs.

It is GDDR5...

The 970 not using full 4gb it's not because of the chip's performance, but because of a design thing. If the 390 can use 8gb, then the 970 can too. So if the 970 non m had more than 4GBs then it would use them, that said, the 970M has 1280 cuda cores which aren't enough to use 6gbs.

It IS available, and in theory the gpu can use it, but it's simply not powerful enough to run games at a high enough resolution to actually need it.

depends on the specific gpu and laptop. Some of them (especially lower end models) use "standard" ddr3, which is slower but also cheaper.

  • 4 weeks later...

My 870m has 6Gb as well so I do not see what's so surprising about the 970m following suit.

I will completely agree, however, that except when SLI-d, the 6Gb is completely useless, as anything that requires that much is guaranteed be bottle-necked by the lack of its processing power.
