Go to solution Solved by tomas710,

whats the overclocking chip? how can i buy a better  one?

i also own a asus hero motherboard, would that help with overclocking?

It's luck, some chips overclock better, the hero is a good mobo, that part should be fine, but right away, 4.6 is a BIG maybe, you may get 4.4, depends if you got lucky with the CPU you got, just how it works, more than 4.6 on a hyper 212 evo is almost impossible, and 4.6 is unlikely. I had a CM Seidon 120V and that let me overclock to 4.5, now i got a better cooler and i can get 4,7. But you gotta lower your expectations, 4.8 ain't happening, 4.6 if you're really lucky.

i wanna overclock my cpuwth a budget cooler which one is better for the job?

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO or  Noctua NH-L9I?

the Hyper 212 evo, noctua is a premium brand, the NH-L9I is for HTPC and not overclocking, a comparable noctua cooler would be much more expensive. Do you have any other options? There are better/quieter/prettier budget coolers

System

  • CPU
    I7-4790K @ 4,7GHz
  • Motherboard
    Asus MAXIMUS Formula VI

you got a 4790k? if so the stock frequency is 4, 4.4 is turbo so maintaining 4.4 is an overclock and it depends on your chip how much you can get.

  • CPU
    I7-4790K @ 4,7GHz

It's 4.0, i have the same cpu, on air, i would say 4.5-4.6 is a good cpu, you may get 4.4, remember 4.4 is the turbo frequency, that's only 2 cores on mild usage, it's very different to maintain 4.4 on 4 cores all the time

    I7-4790K @ 4,7GHz

i have no idea what the hell we are talking about xD hahaha

so the short answer is yes? i can get it at 4.6 with the 4790k with 212evo?

Maybe, if you got a great overclocking chip, but with that kind of cooling 4.4-4.5 is more likely
