I recently replaced my GTX 770 with a G1 Gaming GTX 970. I began noticing in games that I was getting random hitching and deep FPS drops. When I checked the CAM software it showed the my GPU usage was going all over the place in a short period of time. Here are the graphs of it. I have no idea what's causing this. My system is clean, my drivers are up to date. Help would be very much appreciated.

in the nvidia control panel, what is your power management mode set to when you get those huge fps drops?

you may get better performance by changing the power management mode to "performance" as opposed to adaptive, etc.

what are the options it gives you?

also, have you tried overclocking your graphics card? if not, check out my guide; link is my forum signature

reinstall drivers?

is this in a certain game or no

These are for various games. Pic 1 is Dishonored stock, Pic 2 and 4 are Wolfenstein: TNO overclocked and stock, Pic 3 is usage over the last day, and Pic 5 is Borderlands 2 (Most issues with this one).

I set it to prefer maximum performance. I overclock using the Nvidia control panel tool which only gets me to 1080mhz. Still figuring out the finer details of overclocking which is why I'm using that instead of Afterburner. I'll check out that guide.

did you have it set to prefer maximum performance when you were having those frame drops?

try setting it to adaptive. maybe that will fix the issue

Made it worse. Could it have anything to do with my BIOS? They are out of date. Not sure if I want to run the risk of making my computer unbootable though. By the way, this is on Windows 7 Pro SP1 in case that might be relevant.

this is what i want you to do. set all of your nvidia control panel settings to default. remove your overclock as well.

once everything has been set to default, check to see if you run into the same fps drops

if you do, change power management mode to maximum performance and re-check

let's go from there

Tried both, same deal. ):

keep your settings at default. even the power management mode.

are you running the latest gpu drivers from nvidia?

Default settings and latest drivers. Is there a possibility that the drivers from the last card could still be there? If so how would one find them.

download display driver uninstaller and run that in safe mode. follow the instructions and it should wipe all selected driver's from your system. at that point, you can install new drivers.

how badly are you getting frame drops? is it seriously impacting performance? could this just be normal for your card?

do you have any leftover settings from msi afterburner or another overclocking utility?

I'll download the uninstaller. In Borderlands to I get a average of about 160fps which will first halve then drop to 48fps at random. This also happens in Dishonored but only occasionally. There are also not any leftover settings from MSI afterburner as I never put any in.

What is that monitoring program? Maybe try monitoring with MSI Afterburner before anything else

Nude Fist 1: i5-4590-ASRock h97 Anniversary-16gb Samsung 1333mhz-MSI GTX 970-Corsair 300r-Seagate HDD(s)-EVGA SuperNOVA 750b2

Name comes from anagramed sticker for "TUF Inside" (A sticker that came with my original ASUS motherboard)

Program found 770 drivers. They were uninstalled and things seem to be working a bit better. I'll try monitoring with afterburner for better results. I was using the cam software that came with my Kraken X61. It also tracks GPU usage and temps.
