Hey guys, so just got round to playing TW3, only been at it for an hour or so, but I'm finding the KBM controls really clunky. I tend to prefer using keyboard, but have a controller. I remember some people discussing control changes here, does anyone have a list of good control settings to use, as I'd appreciate it. Or is this just a game better with controller?

Also, I'm using 290x crossfire and typically hover around 45-55fps on ultra settings at 1080p... is that normal? This game must be stupidly hard to run if that's the case.

Use the alternate movement style I'm not sure where it is under settings but it makes you character miles more responsive. Yeah the game is hard to run too. I've had zero issues using a keyboard and mouse...

this game is indeed pretty hard to run, especially with hairworks on and stuff.

anyway, i definitely reccomend playing it with a controller! i played through it with an x360 controller and the controls where super smooth.

I 100% agree with @werto165 about using the new alternative movement style, I played the vast majority of the game without it because it was only released in the last patch, but I was surprised about how much of a difference it actually made, it makes the game look and feel a lot better imo.

I disagree with the idea of using a controller for this game though.

I've been a big console gamer most of my life, every since the ps1 right upto the ps4 even, so I'm very used to playing with a control, I even played Skyrim on the ps3 and enjoyed it more with the controller than I did with the keyboard and mouse when I tried it on PC

But for Witcher 3, after I changed like 2 small things like having sprint toggle on left ctrl, and my 2nd potion slot on T instead of F, and F to lock onto the target I found that perfect for me, and I got used to it very very quickly, I have recently been playing the game on my brothers PS4 and just found it a little more annoying in combat, but in other aspects of the game it was totally fine using the controller.

I play with both. And with my 970 I get anywhere from 40 - 60 fps on ultra 1080P Hairworks on.

How in the world are people getting such low frame rates on top tier cards?

I have a r9 270 and i run the game on ultra (hairworks off) with 30-40 fps.

i beat the game with just kb+m and I was good for the most part. but it depends on your preference. witcher 3 is still very good to play with a controller.

Thanks, I'll give the alternate style a go on Sunday when I get home.

Also, really not sure what's up with the framerate. 2 290xs should be able to smash anything at 1080p...

If you're using hair works on AMD TW3 is notorious for being horribly optimized last I checked, on my 970 SLI I get 60 fps constant no problem, at 1440p I think I can get solid 45+ as long as the filters aren't going crazy with huge battles and sunsets lol

hairworks is a GPU killer, it makes my frame rate go from the 40's down to the 20's.

When I had 660ti SLI setup I could get 60FPS on max settings tho.

I was using a hairworks thing I found on Reddit to run on AMD without having a huge performance impact, but I'll disable it next time and see if my framerate rockets up.

Well there was a new update, it used to be a huge GPU killer due to the 8x msaa on each strand of hair, now you can select your AA and also select the quality low and high, just assume that high has more strands of hair. The draw distance for the shrubbery also has a big impact on FPS>
