I bought it during Summer Sale on Steam and returned it. Optimization was a bit sub-par for my liking (I'd expect 60 fps >.>)

I have absolutely no fucking idea about what you are talking, STALKER series is one of the best optimized series ever, AA rapes the game but thats because of the game engine, story alone worth the buy for that amount of money.

During the first hour, I had 3 hard crashes and the frames were all over the place with Shadow of Chernobyl. Not sure why. I was really eager to play it.

Really? it runs fine even on my 11" laptop :D never had an issue, must have played these 3 games a billion times so far on like many different pcs over the years

 

Maybe its something else?

Well, I did push everything to the max (AA included) and changing the resolution alongside the other settings forced a crash for some reason. I managed to avoid the crashes when I changed both things individually. As for the game, it was fine for the most part but I did get some weird dips every now and again. Things I don't really notice in other games.

Fair enough, im pretty sure I am running with full AA with no dips, but I might have knocked it down, i tend to not play with AA very high

It did seem quite interesting and I guess I might give it another go in the future but for now I'll stick to Witcher 3 :D

Funnily enough i am struggling to force myself through the witcher 2 :P, I got through one (after like 4 years) and I was trying to blow through 2 quickly but I am just so bored D:

 

I just love the atmosphere, and I love abandoned russian buildings in real life anyway :D

Should've tried some mods, I believe there are a few optimization mods out there.  I used Stalker Complete, although the preferred mod may have changed since I last played the games years ago.
