I am building a new computer for myself and need some help with the OS...

Should I wait the extra month it would take me to buy a full version of Windows? Could I install Ubuntu on for the time being until I can get Windows? Or maybe, could I use the key from my laptop's Windows to get my new computer running Windows right away and then change the OS on my laptop to Ubuntu? (I'm sure it's not that simple)

I'm really new to all of this and need a lot of help... I need my new computer to be running as soon as possible after I get the last components of the build.

I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

yeah you can still get Win8 and upgrade (which is cheaper and maybe results in the same OS, depends on MS new version of the upgrade-algorithm - MS dont fuck this up again pls..).

I love Linux but I dont know if you wanna start with it as your primary OS right out of the box. also you cant migrate from Linux to Windows.

For most of the hardware there should be drivers released already so the install should be easy.

So yeah, the cheapest and easiest way to do this and keep your data is getting Win8.1 and do the upgrade ;)

Well, the only linux I've used is on my Raspberry Pi. I'm eventually going to have windows on my new computer no matter what. But I did kind of want to try Ubuntu out, maybe I could put that on my laptop? Is there a way to install more than one OS? That way if I don't like it, I could go back to Windows?

there is Wubi (using Ubuntu alongside of Windows and a easy way to install and uninstall) but if you want to just try it why not just install Ubuntu, play around with it and when the time comes just format the drive and install windows? ofc if you have more than 1 drive I wouldnt format and use them in Ubuntu since you will just have to reformat them for windows again. linux uses a different filesystem (etx3/4) than windows (ntfs). it can read many systems like ntfs, hfs+ (Apple) etc thanks to drivers but it doesnt use them as a basis

you can also take a look at virtualbox and run Ubuntu as a VM in Windows?

I wish it were that simple! I thought about a VM, but my current computer has problems running notepad..... I think I'm going to go with the free trial of windows and get a product key when I have a little extra money. Then when I want to, I will try the VM on my new system later. Thanks for all the help!

its been forever man they would of did it by now they dont give a fuck about those games anymore keep dreaming brotha

you heard of valve right? steam OS? game engines with decent OpenGL support? if the industry would care and fuck DirectX in the a** we would have had all games on Linux ages ago. Well sure didnt happen but with Intel, Nvidia and AMD finally stepping up a bit on the driver side Steam OS might actually change something.

I personally play only Dota2 and CSGO anymore (except at LAN parties) so I would be fine with Linux. but it would be a waste of 300+ games to switch to Linux right now.. :(
