Things are cheap in America? Check again

Go to solution Solved by PCBudgetSolutions,

What I am saying is, to say "Things are cheaper in the US then elsewhere" is a terribly bold statement.  Things to factor is that fact that our economy and wages as a whole are MUCH lower in the US then elsewhere.  Our Unemployment is stupidly high and the cost of living in say AUS is as the OP showed 40-60% higher than us, but their wages are more than TWICE what ours is.  Also factor in, we get DESTROYED on healthcare.  If your company offers it good luck paying less than 800/month, it's 1400 through the government, and we have income tax and 7 other taxes out of our paychecks.  I didn't even pay healthcare and I lost 41% from taxes...

EDIT: apparently the AUS min wage for 21+ is 16.88 which is over 18 USD, which mean's its not 2.5 times ours yet their average cost of living is only about 1.5 times ours.  And we get taxed just as bad or worse.  GG I am gonna move to AUS, let crime there as a whole too!

National min wage is 7.25/hr and that's what I go off of.

Ok, but the National min wage means that is the lowest possible wage you can get, which isn't really a good way to go, instead you should do the national average, I know a bunch of states that add on to the minimum wage of $7.25, like my state for example, I think it would make more sense to get the national average, it may only be slightly higher, in that case I am mistaken, but I feel like the national minimum wage would be closer to $8.

Except that i highly doubt the majority of people - you included, work at the minimum wage...

And i think you underestimate their cost of living, i visited Perth/Melbourne Australia once and i could immediately tell that these people don't pay a dollar for a hamburger, just saying.

P.S: And if you wanna argue, my country of residence Singapore has no minimum wage. Supermarket cashiers/Mcdonalds Part-timers usually get around SGD$5.00-6.00 per hour which translates to USD$3.93 - 4.71.

Like Nertballs said, 'the grass is always greener on the other side!'

But tbh, America has the majority of things cheaper than everywhere else so you should zip on this one, electronics included. :/

I'd like to know where I can get a burger for a dollar. Shoot, I went to Denny's yesterday morning, it cost me $9 for a cheeseburger & a handful of fries, if you factor in the tip, it's nearly $11 for a freaken burger. Even fast food joints it cost at minimum $6 and their burgers are half the size they used to be when they cost half as much.

In relation to the UK, VAT is something like 20% of the price of anything valid, plus our minimum wage is so we can pay National Insurance which is a tax that automatically is deducted from our pay on payday.

Golly, I sure hope that my internets are all in a safe place...

Just going to throw this out there: in my case, things would be much cheaper in America.

-My dad is a GP here in Belgium, which means he (net) makes about half the money he would make in the USA

-The Euro is worth more than the USD

-Consumer electronics are way more expensive: for example: the nexus 4 cost 500 EUR upon launch in Belgium, which was 6months after the original launch

-Taxes are about the highest in all of Europe here.

Then again, we have good healthcare, so I'm not going to complain

What is the minimum wage there?

the minimum wage is around 200 - 250 usd.

keep in mind SHARING rent between 3 people for a 1 1/2 room appartment is around 180 usd per month (including a little funding for food) that leaves you with 20 to 70 usd if you are on minimum wage which you have to gass up your car with etc for the rest of the month. the average beginners wage is around 300 - 350 usd though.

people here actually go to america for a year or two and come back stinking rich (not rich as in don't have to find a job though, just a lot of cash in comparison) living off of minimum wage for that year in america since essentials are fairly cheaper etc.

Ummm get the fact that a 780 actually costs that much out of your head plz :)

I live within 10km of the 3 biggest computer retailers in Australia and no GTX 780 us under $800 (without shipping)

Just look at the kinds of prices we are charged: https://www.centrecom.com.au/nvidia-amd-graphics-cards?pagesize=30&orderby=11

This thread amuses me. You all should chill the fuck out. A GTX 780, in my country, costs 942 USD. MINIMUM wage is $1,13/h. Yes, that's ONE DOLLAR. But almost no one works at minimum wage. Average income is $2,47/h.

Neat, right ? Average person has to work 381 hours to afford a GTX 780, that's ALMOST 16 DAYS non-stop working. My country is even a part of the European Union, i have a Galaxy S4, its not like we live in mud huts. The worst part is, i have a BSc in engineering, and i'm getting payed ~750 USD a month, with monthly payments for bills/commodities is around ~200 USD, and for the same job, someone in the US, that probably knows less than me, is getting payed absurdly more, because he was fortunate enough to be born in a different country. So, quit bitching around. Thanks.

Video cards went up in price recently, even the HD 7990 dropped to 700 now back to 800.  bUT HERE: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=136&sort=a5

After you convert your GTX 780's are about 720 USD, where ours are about 660 USD.  But the average costing of living in AUS including taxes, gas, food etc (I did an analysis that took 8 hours to compare btw) is 1.52 times higher than ours, while the average wage is 2.48 times higher than ours (as is your min wage is 2.52 higher than ours).  Therefore effectively making AUS paying 35% less than us on average.

Specs: Core I7-2600K @ 4.5GHz @ 1.35V, 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance Black 1600MHz CL9, Cooler Master Evo 212, MSI Z77 Mpower Motherboard, Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Vapor-X @ 1000/1400, Cooler Master HAF 932 Blue Edition w/ 3 Cougar Hydraulic Bearing 120MM fans (2 up top 1 in the bottom) replaced side panel with a window, and rear fan with a Cougar Hydraulic Bearing 140MM, Cooler Master GX 650 80+ Bronze PSU, Samsung DVD-RW, Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD, Seagate 750GB SATA III 7200RPM

Pcpart pickers prices are unrealistic for Australians because most of the prices are from international retailers and the shipping here gets kinda ridiculous sometimes. Also a 7990 was never $700 or $800 here. $1149 is probably the best realistic price here which is $1048 USD

Also what is your minimum wage because ours is actually only $16.37 an hour for a full time adult and $622.20 a week
