I've got this Seasonic S12II-620 Bronze 620W that keeps not working for an indiscriminate amount of time , and then working again . The first time i thought it was because the PSU locked up some protection because of electricity being unstable , pulled it out of the case , tried turning it on by bridging the the cables on the 24 pin connector and still nothing ( fan wont turn on ) . The next day it started working again , but was unsure if to mount it again . Talked to the PC shop support staff online about it and they said the same thing i believed , that some protection must have been triggered . Since then , 2 months ago ,  it happened 2 times , the last time being today , and since the first time i've been using it on a UPS to rule out electricity problems  .

So i'm going to RMA this bastard , but i need this machine to work until then . The problem is the only PSU that i have as a spare was the old VERY LOUD PSU that was in this machine before the seasonic one .

I've opened the PSU ( its already out of warranty ) and cleaned it of dust but it's still LOUD AS F. , the problem being a 80mm fan that's running at an insane fixed RPM ( like 3000-4000 ) . I'm thinking of just getting it out of there and cool the PSU in another way . Now for the thing i need you for . Can i simply let it in passive cooling , or should i point a fan at where the exhaust hole is ( fractal silent series r2 ) and remove 80mm the fan , or open it up , remove the 80mm fan and place the fractal fan inside it and somehow close the PSU .

EDIT :The fan is at the BACK of the psu ( next to the power plug )

-SNIP-

I would replace the fan with something quieter and not so noisy, but it's not a good idea to take it out completely and have it run passively.

And of course the regular safety thing about opening PSU's and letting it sit for 30 min- 1hr before opening and not touching the contacts on the capacitors.

I failed to mention the 80mm fan is at the BACK

Thats ok remove it and zip tie a fan on top leave the cover off, it will work fine, a PSU doesent make that much heat it just needs a bit ofdirect air flow
