MSI GTX980ti Gaming temps

Schoolofmonkey

Hey guys.

I returned my Gigabyte GTX980ti G1 Gaming, coil whine got worse and the display ports were acting up.
They didn't have any others so I went with a MSI GTX980ti Gaming.

Now not ever owning anything MSI before I was a little reluctant, but I gave it a shot, card performs well, has a 77.7% ASIC rating,
but temps seem a little high, a few degrees higher than a lot of the reviews, I've maxed out at 79c.
Is this normal for these cards?

Here's the GPU-Z readout after a run of Firestrike Ultra:

That's fine, 79 degrees is nothing to worry about, my G1 980Ti is at 76 degrees right now (Been running folding/BOINC maxed out load for a long while [couple of days]) and I wouldn't be worried unless it gained another 10 degrees on top of that.

After owning 3 Gigabyte card (780ti, 980 and the faulty GTX980ti) I never saw temps over 70c with the same benchmarks, so I wasn't sure.

Shame they have a warranty sicker on the cooler screw, I have a Kraken G10 and X60 sitting on my shelf itching to go on it..lol.

My Zotac is 72° max in Firestrike. Your 78° are ok and the Crad will not reduce the clockspeed.

@o0Martin

I managed to drop 5c by putting my Soundblaster Zx card above the GTX980ti Gaming, instead of 2 slots below.

This allowed for more direct air flow from the 2x140mm bottom intake fans.

Maxed at 75c, fan speed at 66% (instead of the 79c and 77%)

Yep all good.

Just did a 1500Mhz GPU and 1910Mhz VRAM OC on the card, 77c with 72% fan speed, that's more like it.

Ok the temps were still bugging me so I contacted MSI.

They sent me a screenshot of their card running Heaven.

So these temps are very normal.

Good info for anyone considering buying one.

My MSI GTX 980 ti stays at around 83 degrees using the afterburner default fan curve. Most I've seen when logging temps was 86. I am worried that it's slowly suiciding...I think it would go even higher but I suspect there is throttling.

My room temp is 30 or more this time of the year though...

Can't even hold my hand on the pc case for long, there is a camp fire inside...fueled by my paychecks. I hope the warranty kicks in if it burns without OC or I will kick myself.

And I was so hopping to OC at least a little, to scared...to hot....

Thats pretty normal, unless you increase fan speed or move more air across the card, the Twin RAZR cooler has a hard time handling the heat from the 980 Ti cores, they were meant for the 970 and 980 series.

You can see how hot my overclocked MSI gets with voltage modded BIOS, even at 100% fan speed

Out of curiosity, what temps do you guys get on the VRMs?

No idea, as there is no way to measure them and nvidia doesn't have a thermal probe on them either

Really? I actually find that odd, especially on the higher end models.

Not really, not even EVGA's classifieds and Kingpins cards have it, people are much more concerned about GPU core temps

I just find that weird that Nvidia's cards don't have VRM sensors whereas AMD cards have had them since GCN 1.0 and the 7000 series on half of their cards.
