Hello guys, I need a little advice.

I'm planning to build a new gaming rig, and already ordered the 4790k because i got a slight discount (€320 instead of €360)

However, Skylake is apparently launching earlier than I thought and now I'm thinking about returning the cpu and wait for Skylake, since I won't be getting all of my parts before August 5th anyway.

So I am wondering about a few things, maybe you guys can tell me what you think:

- Are the Skylake chips that much better than Haswell? I've heard of a 10% IPC increase, doesn't sound like much

- How expensive will Skylake be anyway? I have no idea about Intel's pricing scheme

- Will there be a K chip at launch? I'd prefer that.

- Right now I'd be going with the RoG Ranger Mobo, will there be a similar Board in that pricerange at launch or would I have to spend a lot more?

- If i decide to stay with the 4790k after Skylake launches, could Haswell drop in price which would save me a few bucks?

So, would returning the cpu maybe be worth it or should I just stick with it?

I am slowly beginning to have an idea what I'm doing

It won't be K chips, they got rid of it. It's now C

-I've heard of something more along the lines of a 30-40% IPC improvement over Haswell (The 10% you heard of is probably Broadwell, not Skylake). That, coupled with their support for DDR4 will make them better performers regardless of whether or not this is true. In addition, Skylake should have better overclocking than Haswell. Two confirmed overclocks show one chip reaching 5.2GHz on air and another reaching 6.5GHz on LN2,

-Rumors (and history) says they will only be about $30 more expensive than their current counterparts for the first few months, then the prices of both should fall by that same amount.

-No K chips. Intel has changed the naming scheme to C instead of K, but the new C chips are completely unlocked much like their K counterparts. Edit: Turns out the C chips were only for Broadwell, Skylake will return to K chips.

-Mobos should be about $30-$60 more  expensive for the same features for about a month or two is this release follows a similar pattern to previous ones.

-As previously stated, Haswell probably won't drop in price until well after the Skylake release.

I see no reason not to return the Haswell chip. If it turns out that Skylake isn't as good as the rumors say then your system will still perform better than a Haswell one and you'll have an interesting story to tell.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

I'm in the same boat. I have had all my specs picked out for a while, but haven't been able to pull all the money together until now. Been running an 8350 for quite some time, and I was wanting better performance in CPU heavy games, and the 4790k seemed like the way to go. But turns out that most of my stuff wouldn't be shipped until then anyway, so at this point, i'm going to ride it out a few days longer and see what happens in terms of pricing, and if it comes within 20-30 bucks of the 4790k then I will surely be going with 6700K. Unless Haswell prices drop like crazy, then I wouldn't see the harm in still going with the 4790k.

Alright, thanks! I'm going to return the cpu then. I'd love to see a ~30% improvement and high clock speeds, especially since Arma 3 is just violently loving dat Cpu power ;D

It's nowhere near a 30% IPC improvement. It's ~11% over Haswell (Broadwell was 5% over Haswell and skylake is ~5% over broadwell, so just over 10% maybe)

False. Maybe 40% over Sandy Bridge. Not Haswell, not even close.

DDR4 is not good right now, and using DDR3 appears to require DDR3L (1.35v DDR3, like mobile haswell does) and thus not even very good DDR3 will be available as far as RAM goes. Of course if you don't care about bad timings or overvolt your RAM with XMP etc, you might find decent DDR4... but it's still going to be much more expensive than Haswell-compatible RAM.

There is ZERO evidence to support this. When Skylake launches and people try to overclock we'll find out whether or not it's good.

My main concern about Skylake is just money, since I'll be paying more for the Cpu, Motherboard and ddr4 ram. I guess going Skylake is gonna get close to my financial Limit.

Keep the Haswell. Skylake right now is more money for a little CPU performance benefit and worse, more expensive RAM.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

some board by ASrock will allow, for ddr3 and ddr4 but you only get two dim slots. But I nice kit of ddr4 ram by g.skill is only $110 2x8 kit

Skylake is not going to bring anything mindblowing to the table.

Other then a new Z170 / H170 / Q170 chipset boards with DDR4 support and 4 extra pci-e 3.0 lanes.

USB3.1 native maybe?

But thats about it, in terms of performance increase, i personaly dont expect anything mindblowing.

Most improvements will most likely be in the igpu again.

I dont think its realy worth waiting for it, if you can catch a good deal on a 4790K.
