Core i7 "Ivy Bridge-E" Pricing Surfaces

With Core i7-4770K "Haswell" and Z87-based motherboard combos going for as low as $450, Intel is shaping its upcoming Core i7 "Ivy Bridge-E" HEDT platform in a way that doesn't create a big pricing gap between the two platforms, and that those with the monies for an i7-4770K + Z87 platform are sufficiently tempted to drop in a few extra coins for an HEDT platform.

To begin with, Core i7-4820K is expected to be priced at US $310, a whole $40 cheaper than the Core i7-4770K. This quad-core chip features 3.70 GHz clocks, 3.90 GHz maximum Turbo Boost, 10 MB of L3 cache, 48 PCI-Express gen 3.0 lanes, and a quad-channel memory controller; compared to the 3.60 GHz clocks, 3.90 GHz Turbo Boost, 8 MB L3 cache, 24 PCI-Express gen 3.0 lanes, and a dual-channel memory controller. To its credit, the i7-4770K features higher IPC thanks to its more advanced micro-architecture. Socket LGA2011 motherboards, such as Intel's DX79TO can be had for as low as $150. Tempting offer there.

Moving on, the Core i7-4930K will be the cheaper of the two six-core Ivy Bridge-E parts. It will be priced at US $555, making it almost $50 cheaper than i7-3930K (launch pricing) from the previous generation. This chip features clock speeds of 3.40 GHz, with 3.90 GHz maximum Turbo Boost, and 12 MB of L3 cache. Leading the pack is the Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition. This part stops shy of charging a four-figure sum, bearing a US $990 price-tag, $60 cheaper than the Core i7-3970X. The six-core part features 3.60 GHz clocks with 4.00 GHz maximum Turbo Boost, and 15 MB of L3 cache.

Intel's Core i7 "Ivy Bridge-E" HEDT processors will launch some time between September 4th and 10th.

I have no idea why they bothered with numbering Sandy Bridge with Ivy Bridge numbering, only going to confuse people further.

Completely passing this as well, will buy a i7-5960X when it releases with 8 cores(but I bet they will have two or more cores soldiered off and I bet Skylake will be a 6 core on desktops, that's if AMD actually has something to compete with, otherwise we are at 4 cores for a while).

48 PCI Express 3.0 lines I like, that's enough for 3 way crossfire or sli with all 3 running at 16x or 4 way crossfire/sli without the need for a PLX chip

Yeah but I wonder if any new motherboards will come to the market when Ivy-Bridge-E comes to the market in September.

I would expect to get a couple at least. x89 here we come.

Why is intel's "Enthusiast"  grade platform worse than the normal platform? these CPU's needed to be out long before Ivy Bridge Standard was released, not after haswell. if anything, LGA2011 should be in front, but it is slacking behind.

I'm not quit sure if we will see X89 motherboards or not, from the reaserch that I have read, Intel is still sticking with the X79 platform for Ivy-Bridge-E :(

it doesn't work like that, a 3960x still wipes the floor with a 3770k despite being sandy bridge. they are an architecture behind, but not behind in performance.

are you sure? i know they're sticking with 2011, but I hadn't heard they weren't going to release an x89

I'm not sure, but everything about Ivy-Bridge-E that I have researched, has no mention of X89, only X79. I would like to see X89 but can't find anything about it actually happening.

This is from Wikipedia " Core-i7 versions designated i7-4820K, i7-4930K, i7-4960X, are expected to release in the 3rd quarter of 2013 and to remain compatible with existing X79 and LGA2011 hardware." and every other site that I go to says the same thing :(

doesn't necessarily mean we won't get x79, ivy bridge was backwards compatible with x68 too. x79 was sandy bridge-e so the backwards compatibility isn't surprising.

If these use solder instead of thermal paste like rumored i plan on getting a i7 4820K over the 4770k

The Sandy-E IHS was soldered, so I am guessing that Ivy-E will also be soldered.

The "Enthsiast"-class is a by-product of their Xeon Line-Up. With Xeons customers expect everything to work flawlessly. Reliability is more important than pure speed.

well there better be some new mobo since these processor requires a new socket. older lga2011 will be incompatible with these and you ll need a new lga2011 boards. at least that s what i heard.

(new sockets still has 2011 pins but they re moved around or something like that)

Anything I write is just a comment, take is as such, there is no guarantees associated with anything I say.

Glenwing is correct, there is no X89...never was there to be an X89.

This X89 talk surfaced when a few uneducated 'theorytech' sites published articles about the mythical X89....and then it spread through the web like fire.

This new chips are nice, especially the upcoming 3910k (6 core 3.0Ghz for $350) but it is all too little too late.

It is, someone already destroyed their ES chip trying to delid. lol.

Reason why it was like the SB_E IHS is because Ivy runs very hot, It'll run more hot than the 3770k if IB-E isnt soldered

Still no 8-core non-Xeon chip from Intel :/

yes but Intel's quad cores are faster than AMD's octa cores. Intel's focus seems to be on single core proficiency, which is good for gaming. That's going to change when the new consoles come out and push 8 core optimization though.

Current socket LGA 2011 boards will be compatible with Ivy Bridge-E.  What you are talking about is LGA 2011-3, which is for Haswell-E.

Yup, you should just need a BIOS update if anything!

I knew people were going to get confused with 2011-3. Intel sucks at naming.
