New CPU or GPU for Skyrim?

Go to solution Solved by TheKDub,

just tested it, erm both at 97% or around that...  xD

ill get a new cpu first, what should i go for on an i5 level?

i5 4460, 4690, 4690k (if you want to overclock), or 4590.

With my specs (see signature) I manage to get 60+ FPS maxed out at 1080p with roughly 100 mods :/ (Hardly ever CTD though, so that's nice)

I had more mods before but kept crashing all over the place...

So I play a lot of Skyrim, and I play with ALOT of mods (253 to be exact), and I don't get too great performance. In game I get around 40 frames and commonly a lot of ctds, I understand ctds are to do with Skyrim in general but I noticed my vram was maxed out when I got a lot of crashes or freezes, I'm running a gtx 750ti and a pentium g3258 at 4ghz and I'm thinking of an upgrade. Obviously I don't just play Skyrim but it is the main game I play and having good performance is a must, I've got a budget of £250 and am either going to get a 970 or a i5 4690k I was just wondering what to do and needed some advice.

Cheers!

Considering you experience stuttering and vram is maxed id suggest the 970

Load skyrim up in windowed mode, and monitor the CPU usage and GPU usage, if GPU usage is higher, replace the GPU with a better one, if CPU usage is higher then replace the CPU with a better one, if they're both aboput the same then go for either one. (CPU first then GPU would probs be a good idea)

I don't believe so. Not once during both of my playthroughs (with/without DLC) had I crashed. I used to tab out every thirty minutes, too. I'd say it's more to do with a conflicting mod - but hey, just me going off topic.

You could just get the low end i5, which would be a great option.  And maybe see if you can fit a better graphics card in there, if not.  Thats fine, Skyrim is more a cpu game and a better cpu with be better all round and help with allot more than just games.

A new GPU isn't really needed as you've got a GTX 750ti which is perfectly fine, the GTX 750ti can actually probably handle the game just fine unless your running lots of ENBs.  But, the GTX 750ti is probably equal to a pretty good gpu back when skyrim was released, so.  Actually, a new CPU is the best option by far.

I have and 970 and a 4690k @4.4,gpu is always pinned to 99% and i can have about 45ish fps in forrest. I believe it only use two cores so oc the hellout of cpu ifno change get a better gpu, i could still have a 980ti and bring it to its knees.

Mod list in profile.

the i5s would be better for gaming, more specifically the 4690K due to the higher single threaded performance.

Looks fine to me, just it also is a xeon, so the i5 would probably have better performance and compatibility.  However, if the xeon is cheaper by all means go for it.  Its still a good upgrade and don't worry about thread performance as pretty much all these line of cpus have good thread performance.  Get the i5 is ideal, but the xeon is great too.
