ok so i am building a new rig but i have decided to wait on windows because i really dont want to spend the money on it right now i was looking at steam OS because it looks like the best linux distro for games but i wanted to know if it can be used like a regular computer for surfing the web microsoft office (with WINE) ect.. or if it was purely for games and basically turned your computer into a console that you can only play games on?

It become basically a console, if you want something like this, you should install ubuntu.

It basically has all of the same functionality of steam big picture. So, there is a built in web browser.... but that's pretty much it for productivity. Everything else is just for games.

 

Also, you can get cheap copies of windows from sites like G2A.... That's pretty cool..... I guess...

https://insider.windows.com/ you can alow download the insider preview for free the only requirement is that you dont think bios is a plant based fuel and apparently microsoft is going to let you keep using it even after windows 10 release

Steam OS is linux just designed for consoles IMO.   I'm a big fan of both OpenSUSE and Kubuntu which are both good, but Steam is in its final release for Debian. 

So, go for Kubuntu.   

 

You can also go for any Ubuntu based distro, except Elementary, I don't know why but steam and chrome never seem to work for me on there, got chrome installed and steam but their vapour.
