I have an XFX r9 390x on a double and triple 120mm rad. I will (hopefully) be buying one of these: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/UM.CX1AA.001

What kind of performance can I expect if I overclock the snot out of the GPU? What kind of games can I expect to run on this thing, and what will struggle? At what settings?

Look at it in terms of  more pixels to drive = harder for the GPU to run.

well I really cant compare 1680x1050 to 3440x1440 with any reasonable conclusions

I have the same dilemma from the approach of a 980.

Basically, will you be able to play games on it? Absolutely.

Will some games need to have some filters or details turn down? Most likely.

Ok well....

1680x1050 = 1,764,000 pixels

3440x1440 = 4,953,600 pixels

So there are 64% more pixels to drive so you can expect your FPS to drop by more than half with the same settings on that resolution.

So I should try running games with vsync off and take my average framerate times .64? That would give me a rough estimate? Also how much will freesync help with stuttering?

It doesn't really work that way, its not just pixel count x percentage to figure out average FPS. game engines behave differently and we need to think about all the other variables such as mem and stuff.

In my opinion.

Its safe to say you'll be able to game on that fine, just don't expect to be able to run every single game at ultra with all filters. If you don't have that expectation then you'll be fine. Every game will be playable.
