So my buddy is upgrading his CPU and GPU, hes going to be playing at 1080p for the time being but MIGHT upgrade to a 1440p monitor in the near future. He is trying to decide between the 390 and the 970, (im leaning towards the 390), the card is going to be paired with an i5 4460, what do you guys think?

390 no doubt. Better performance, far far more vram for 1440p, and same price. Shouldn't be a debate :3

Check out Jayztwocents

he did about the 390..He states that he can no longer recommend a 970. 390 just performs better for the price.
Don't rely on his video when he chose a weak 1442 mhz 970 against a better overclocked 390.

Anyways for 1440p go for the 390. 1080p go for the 970. They are priced the same for the most part so your getting just as good of a value either way. Take a look at software offering of both sides, heat output, power usage and card size for the best card for you.

First build every: Intel Core i7 4790K, Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1 motherboard, Kingston HyperX FURY 1866 2x8 16GB Kit, Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970 G1 Gaming, Corsair Obsidian 450D Black ATX Mid Tower, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB & 3TB Toshiba HDD, EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2, Corsair H100i GTX 240mm, Gigabyte Bluetooth 4.0/Wifi Card, Logitech G700S. Running on Windows 10

Surface Pro 3: i5 4300U with 8GB of ram and 256GB SSD. Running Windows 10 Pro

How do you figure that the 970 ssc is a weak card? 1442 isn't really a low clock speed, and besides that, the performance differences aren't much between the ssc, and the other brands of the card. It's honestly a fair comparison.

EVGA 970s have power delivery problems which also makes it harder to sustain a good overclock. And considering most other cards reach between 1500-1550 mhz it's not a really good comparison. Other benchmarks also tell a different story...http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/powercolor_pcs_r9_390_8gb/9.htm

I feel that this is necessary here.

Whichever is cheaper I guess. Overclocking comes with luck. So whichever card you pick, you will either end up with a good, bad or average overclocker.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case
